Game Preview, #Rivalry150, Yankee Stadium, 11/22/2014

I know it’s been several years in the making.  I know we are almost at the eve of the biggest edition of the Lehigh/Lafayette Rivalry yet, the one in Yankee Stadium, the 150th meeting, the one I’ve been waiting for years to arrive.

Yet it’s one play, one play, that I keep thinking about in the run-up to this game.

Bubble screen.

I keep seeing that bubble screen in the 149th meeting of Lehigh and Lafayette, the one that put the game out of reach, the one that turned Lehigh’s bid for a championship last season become one that fell just short of a championship.

Lehigh Puts Pedal to Metal, Beats Georgetown 45-24

Lehigh Puts Pedal to Metal, Beats Georgetown 45-24

The term being bandied about the season in regards to the 2013 Mountain Hawks was the “Cardiac Kids”.

Every week, the Mountain Hawks would fall behind.  Every week, there would be hiccups, issues, and heart-stopping moments, but most often would end up in Lehigh victories.

Most fans wondered: Could it be possible, would it be possible, for Lehigh to put the pedal to the metal against an opponent, to surge to a huge lead, go for he jugular early, and never look back?

This Saturday, the Mountain Hawks answered.

Lehigh scored the most points they’d scored in the first half since 2002, scoring on seven of their eight drives of the first half and narrowly missing the eighth.  They’d cruise to a 38-3 halftime lead before the second stringers would make the final score look a lot closer.

In short, it was exactly what most of the 9,866 fans in attendance were looking for in the first Patriot League conference game of the season.  Never trailing.  Making the game’s outcome not be in doubt early.  Winning.

Mountain Hawks Don’t Win With Style Points, But Still Win, 24-10

Mountain Hawks Don’t Win With Style Points, But Still Win, 24-10

Brazilian soccer fans are one hard to please bunch.

It’s not enough for the soccer nation that brought us Pele, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho to simply win their soccer games against the rest of the world: to the high-maintenance fans of the seleção, every game involving the Brazilian nation team needs to had flair and panache: style points.  They can still win, but if they win boring, the fans become restless.

Similarly, Lehigh fans looked to the Mountain Hawks to go up to the upper tip of Manhattan and heap on a stylish win filled with scoring, crispness, and focus.  For some Lehigh fans, Saturday’s game wasn’t supposed to be about the win, it was about the style of the win.

If they were looking to win on style, they didn’t get that.

But more importantly, the Brown and White did get the win, notching a 24-10 victory, inching closer to their goal of a Patriot League title and the all-important autobid.

It wasn’t crisp, and it wasn’t pretty, but it was enough to allow Lehigh to cross the George Washington Bridge with a 5-1 record.

How do you judge an 0-2 team?

It’s not just an academic question the week for Lehigh fans.

It’s way too easy to look at the scores in Monmouth’s first two games of the season – a 42-24 defeat against one of the top teams in the country, Montana State, and a 45-15 defeat on the road at Liberty, which, as any fan following Lehigh last year knows, is an awfully tough place to play.

If there’s a message head coach Andy Coen wants to deliver in between the lines, its simply not to necessarily expect Lehigh to score 40 points on the Hawks this week.

“This football team we’re playing I think is a better team than the one we just played even though they’re 0-2,” he told Mike LoRe of the Express-Times this week.

Housekeeping before the 148th Meeting

Housekeeping before the 148th Meeting

I have some things to do before the 148th this weekend in Easton – namely, two weeks of players of the week (since I forgot for Holy Cross in my zeal to cover the Colgate game) and some links wrapping up last week’s game.

Something that has muted the party  this week has been the heartbreaking story of Lafayette QB Zach Zweizig, whose father, 56, tragically died from complications of a stroke earlier this week.

My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.  I love “The Rivalry”, I really do.  But some things transcend it.

Game Preview: Bucknell at Lehigh

Before the season started, I implored Lehigh fans not to overlook Bucknell. In Year Three of the Joe Susan era, it seemed to me like the Bison, behind a veteran quarterback and an always-tough defense, might be able to build on their 6-5 record last yea…
