Honestly, I’m not surprised by the quick sellout. Villanova sells out every regular season game at the Pavilion (6500 seats), there was high interest from Lehigh fans, and this is the first college basketball game ever at the arena. Besides, Stabler Arena, while convenient parking-wise, isn’t exactly an inspiring basketball venue.
Assuming the game goes well, the important thing the PPL Center does is potentially give Lehigh (and to a lesser degree Lafayette) the opportunity to bring a name program to the Lehigh Valley for a game. It probably wouldn’t be a Duke, Syracuse, or Connecticut, but it could be a Georgetown, Temple, or VCU. It could also raise the profile of the Lehigh/Lafayette rivalry in basketball if any Mountain Hawks/Leopards games are moved to the new arena.
