Maybe I’m just out of the loop now, but it if memory serves, the alumni association under Niemeyer, Bott and Turanchik did a pretty good job of rallying the average troops — not just the Asa Packer folks — around sports.

They seemed to have receptions at all sorts of events (maybe they still do), particularly those out of town — NCAA nationals, tournaments, etc. I remember meeting Craig Anderson at such an event; he gave an engaging talk on playing for Casey Stengel.
