One other thing I forgot to mention is that shortstops are generally viewed as better fielders and better athletes when it comes to the draft. A player who field well enough to stick at SS has much more value than a 2B. That is one reason there were 8 SS’s taken in the first round and no 2B. Also more than twice as many SS’s were drafted overall. Lovullo is viewed as a good fielder and he did have an OBP above .400 this year – which may have convinced a team to draft him. In any event, he is “organizational depth” and is unlikely to advance above A ball if he signs with someone.
