Movement and the ability to change speeds is more important than just speed. Even a fastball needs some movement. Hitters at this level have no problem catching up to a fastball. Lehigh hitters struggled this year with slow, junk-ball pitchers like Holy Cross and some other teams threw against them.
Also, fastpitch softball is more a game of technique, speed and agility than strength. I believe that weight training has slowed our base stealers down and may be affecting our hitting. You don’t have to be strong to hit home runs and gappers. My other concern is that football weight trainers may be leading the strength training sessions. I’m not sure they are versed in what women softball players need, especially pitchers.
