Wow!

I’m glad the D gets a feel-good game (despite giving up 537 yards and 38 points, but only 10 in the second half). They got huge breaks with refs’ questionable calling back of two TDs(special teams had one called back, too).

But that’s football and it’s a credit to this team to stick with it and pull it out. Walker (key fumble recovery at end) and T(monster name) had great games on D. Those two guys seemed to fly around the the second half and inject much-needed energy into a D that often looks like it’s playing on its heels or confused.

Overall, though, the D continued to make way too many mistakes and allowed a freshman Colgate QB (18-22, 316, 2 TDs) to net better stats than the incredible ones posted by Mayes, who came up big time (22-30-297, 2 TDs).

This is the first game I’ve seen this year from first snap to last. This team can win the PL, but the O will have to be balanced like it was today (and the way I predicted it would be — and will be throughout the PL, if play calling and teamwork is as good or better than today).

But LU has no room to make mistakes.

I can’t say enough about offense. Definitely A grades at every position. Mayes threaded the needle successfully a few times and made big plays when he had to. The O-line and RBs were awesome, which, as Mayes said after the game, really took the pressure off him.

My opinion about the weakness of defensive coaching (scheme, LB and secondary) over the past few years was cemented today (though they did keep their kids mentally upbeat/confident in the game today). It’s nothing personal — but numbers do not lie. I know high school coaches who demand better fundamentals. I’m sorry, but this has gone on for too long and at the end of the year it needs to change.

Mish back at P was huge. Kickoff return coverage and kickoffs are huge weaknesses. I wonder if there’s any strategy for our kicks when we can’t get touchbacks. If there is, I don’t get it.

I was impressed by Mayes’ leadership in his postgame interview, giving credit to D. He said something like, “Screw the yards, screw the points; they got the stops.”

That was the bottom line today.

Congrats on a team win!
