I thought Mayes, Pelletier, Casey and the rest of the offense really showed what they can do offensively. I think Troy and Gatlin are going to be in NFL camps this coming year, and they put on a show against one of the best defenses in the country. Additionally, I thought Mayes played terrific, turnover-free ball. SBU knew he had to pass often and yet he still delivered the goods.
The defense was what is was. They make some good stops, but also give up way too many big plays. I think what frustrated me most was the last two TDs they gave up. I think every Lehigh fan could have easily accepted a 45-29 loss and chalked it up to a learning experience. What sits a lot less well were those two late touchdowns that made it two straight 50+ point games given up in the playoffs.
I don’t know about everyone else, but I knew this would be a massive challenge for this team. I simply came in looking for a better performance than the one up at UNH. The answer was that is was better offensively – the skill guys really got to show FCS Nation what they were about, which made me very happy. On defense, I don’t see all black clouds and lightning, but the fact is that you can’t give up more than 50 points in games and hope to win. This offseason, it’s up to the coaching staff to develop some stars on defense, guys who will go to Annapolis wearing Lehigh uniforms who will establish a positive identity on defense against an extremely challenging triple-option offense and a team that plays hard every down and is extremely fast and talented. Lehigh goes into the offseason as defending champs and have a chance to build off that success and the victory over Lafayette to make a stand on the national stage.
