I kinda like the way this is shaping up! Thanks for the update, 65!
July 4, 2014 at 12:15 am #14634Disappointed I think I saw and recall Colgate and American I think get to go to lasalle and we are not….we need some rivalries with local Philly schools….
July 4, 2014 at 12:54 am #14636I would not be that disappointed. I’ve been to quite a few games at the Tom Gola Center. The pizza is wonderful but the arena is quite small (about 3,400) I believe and the product has not been that exceptional. I believe that they have only had 3 winning seasons since 2000. Their run in the NCAA 2 years ago was the exception rather than the rule. There is very little parking and Germantown is not the nicest part of Philadelphia (just my opinion)
If we are talking venue, Penn would be a nice place to visit. I haven’t been to the Palestra since I was a child but I have great memories of it.July 4, 2014 at 2:44 pm #14643I’m definitely on the bandwagon for building some tradition with Philly schools. But if the rumored “name team” opener proves to be accurate, I’m VERY happy with that as a starting point. I have no reason to believe that would be an on-going thing – but ya gotta start somewhere.
I also like seeing ASU and DePaul for the road trips, compared to some other recent seasons.July 4, 2014 at 3:44 pm #14644Unofficial, but official…. the game against Villanova is set for Friday, Nov 14…. but would be interesting if we schedule a few more Philly teams, Penn and the Palestra would be a great place to visit
July 4, 2014 at 9:26 pm #14645Been to Palestra recently for some wrestling meets, great facility with tremendous history, Quackers a bit snobbish though, tough to schedule them in football or basketball
July 4, 2014 at 11:06 pm #14646Tmh my disapointment not as much as a lasalle thing as it is we need to start building up some non conf rivals in Philly area which will get more local LU support for program from alumni.
July 4, 2014 at 11:30 pm #14647Being a New Yorker,I have little fixation with Philly. Am interested tho in raising profile of our OOC and if more Philly will help OK. Given Docs recruiting,I think its more important to get marquee games l around the country.
July 5, 2014 at 1:21 am #14648Temple played AT Stabler in the late 90’s. The Owls also played Lafayette at Kirby the night before LU-LC in 2008. Temple has always been pretty open to playing road games against local opponents like Lafayette, Towson and Delaware.
Didn’t Lehigh host St. Joe’s in the last 4-5 years?
I still remember going to the LU-PSU games at Stabler in the late 80’s, early 90’s. Those were fun….
July 5, 2014 at 3:33 pm #14649I’d be very happy with a long-term deal with Temple. Coming off of a tough season last year, this could be ideal timing. Temple’s conference schedule will obviously be tough, so they could probably use a couple of mid-major games. I do consider Temple to be a quality program over time, and am sure that they will bounce back.
Somebody – make it so!July 5, 2014 at 4:26 pm #14650chipwho,
You da man. Nice to see you joining the conversation.IMHO, it would be very difficult to establish any kind of “rivalry” with any Philadelphia school with the possible exception of Drexel. Although the the Big 5 does not officially exist. They will continue to schedule games against each other and they will continue to be the “rivalry” games. With Temple’s move to the AAC, St. Joe’s and LaSalle will now be added to their OOC schedule, and traditionally Temple loves to schedule high profile games in their OOC.
Drexel however is an up and coming program with no real rival OOC that I’m aware of. Penn didn’t even schedul them last year and they are next door neighbors.July 7, 2014 at 5:16 pm #14675Couldn’t agree more with everyone here. The Big 5 would be hard to penetrate on a consistent basis, but Drexel seems like an ideal fit for a long term home and home series. Obviously, no one here knows the behind the scenes stuff, but when two programs like Drexel and Lehigh both complain about getting home games with local interest, it’s very frustrating not to see it happen. Drexel has been begging for home/home games all off season on basketball travelers, and has struggled to get quality home games for years.
I understand Doc wants to recruit nationally, but from a fan perspective decent local mid majors with large alumni pockets seem to be such an obvious draw. I think it is pretty crazy that Lehigh doesn’t play in Philly and in NY every year. For example, two series with Columbia and Fordham that flip flop so Lehigh has one at home and one away in NYC every year. Then try to get a similar situation with Drexel/Penn. 4 decent games a year with two at home and two in key markets. I’m sure it isn’t easy, but it would be great. I guess Columbia/LIU could fit this for NYC (although I would prefer Fordham).
