Well said shore dad. Pretty much the same uestions ee all have. Player mistakes as your standard excuse for poor D falls squarely on staff this far into season. Quick athletic LBs are perfect for a 3-4 if and only if DL,particularly NG, can keep OL off them. If you watch tape of FU or most other games you can easily see that LBs are usually engaged with blockers.
CBs are not that bad but hard to cover if QB rarely pressured. D issues start with DL and cascade back. Are they bad players ? Nope. Not particularly a good fit for 3-4. Problem is coaching.October 27, 2014 at 4:50 pm #16277I wonder if any of the new D coaches ever coached a 3-4 before.
October 27, 2014 at 5:11 pm #16278Rich, your comment “this far into the season” made me think…all the kids must know the system on O and D by now, why didn’t they take the opportunity late in the 3rd or early in the 4th qtr to get the non-starters playing time? It seemed like the perfect opportunity to throw kids in wholesale and see what happens with some extended time. I doubt they’ll have that opportunity the rest of the year.
October 27, 2014 at 5:58 pm #16279Got me. Some new players were rotated in.Siegenthaler and Harvey were a couple I saw. There may have been others. To your point.if players still not up to speed with system now, that is on assts.
October 27, 2014 at 7:26 pm #16280Rich Most of the time I do agree with what you are saying ,but to say our DB are not that bad is being a little to generous .On almost EVERY play at least 1 if not 2 DB’s are playing at least 10 yards off the receiver they are supposed to guard . If the fans can see this ,I am sure the other teams can and do scout our players and know what plays will work against our defense .Rich how many plays of OVER 50 yards has the defense given up to the other teams offense ??? It has to be between 10 to 15 at least .Playing CATCH-UP football against good teams who have scouted our simple plays is easy pickings for there defense .
October 27, 2014 at 7:44 pm #16281Seems more likely 61 that is where coaches put them. Big plays have killed us all yr. It is not just lack of speed or ability. These kids have that. They dont seem to react quickly to their own reads. Coaching, coaching ….
October 27, 2014 at 8:47 pm #16282shore dad your first post was the best of this whole thread. Siegenthaler is #22. He has been hurt last 3 games and hasnt played. Ive been calling for the younger players to be thrown in the fire for weeks shore dad, but others say they cant be better than what we already have. I know for a FACT they cant be worse! Only thing to play for is 150. After seeing Coens interview, it looks like theyll probably play more seniors since they have 4 weeks of football left (Coens words). Good thing is if they had defensive recruits at the game, they THINK they have a shot at playing next yr if they come to LU. Defense was pathetic. Like i’ve been saying all yr, how can you expect different results with the same players?
October 27, 2014 at 8:52 pm #16283Looking at game again. I wonder if Shaf is having a recurrnce of arm issues he had last spring.
