After 4 games Brad in 2nd nationally in yards with 1488, tied for 1st with 14 TD passes and tied for 1st in points resposible for with 94.
September 24, 2017 at 6:17 pm #32172Excellent for him….team is 0-4…that’s gotta hurt!
September 24, 2017 at 6:26 pm #32173It does. Those Small years. Most of his QBs were top 10 nationally each year. The product of having to outscorebother team for the W.
September 24, 2017 at 8:41 pm #32174I’m sure he’d trade half those yards for a few LBs who can make stops, let alone a W. I was Hank-era…we did give up some big numbers, but they were usually shoot outs, 43-42 comes to mind, we were not this bad. The outliers, 77 to Idaho and 60+ to Delaware (same year) were a time where we were just not on the level of those I-AA deep playoff run teams. Its very different on D now, outmatched across the board.
September 24, 2017 at 9:03 pm #32175Dont see us overmatched on an individual basis. We very athletic overall with decent size and speed. So far these guys particularly at LB are lost. The missed assignments are glaring and each is now having an unfortunate domino effect as others try to cover. Tackling is bad mostly because kids out of position trying arm tackles. Bottom line D is atrocious not due to lack of talent but not knowing or doing their assignments.
Do agree Hank may have put all his best atletes on O but his defenses were never this bad.-

September 24, 2017 at 10:24 pm #32178No not all D but D did absolutely nothing to stop Penn. 1 punt. Mayes wasnt perfect but he did get us 5 TDs 4 passing. So im gonna put most of the blame on D as they contributed nothing. All you are saying is Mayes should have been perfect and maybe we win 70-65. Perfection in a 1st year starter rather a high bar . I lokk to him to improve as he gets more experience. Can we say tbe same about our D??
September 24, 2017 at 11:32 pm #32179Mayes took responsibility for his mistakes in post game comments yesterday. But Mayes did not lose that game. The defense gave up 65 points, yes 21 were off turnovers but the defense stopped no one

September 25, 2017 at 12:22 am #32181have to add some realism here, when we are in continual catch up and D makes zero stops and the QB must throw 40+ times a game, that is recipe for what we are seeing, Brad is being put in a bad position and I believe doing a heck of a job given circumstances, early in the year I thought he was too slow in making progressions and staying with first option too long, I don’t see that now and he seems a little more confident in keeping the ball on the option although that will never be his strength
so I have to disagree with OO on this issue, our 4 losses all hang on the D
September 25, 2017 at 12:28 am #32183You guys are incredible. Yeah Brad is not Shaf, who BTW you all trashed, he is a 1st yr starter with a good bit to learn. His reads are in consistent but improving. Nitpicking a QB who is really doing very well. His 1st INTs of the year on Sat. 2 were bad passes that he forced. He has to learn but I’d cut him some slack given the intense pressure our D puts on him to score.
Regardless oo you find he played poorly even with 5 TDs. He couldve played better for sure but he hardly played poorly. Carping and nitpicking serve no purpose.September 25, 2017 at 1:32 am #32184Ok gentlemen. I’ve only posted on here once before. But of course when someone calls my son out the way he did, I felt the need.
We really appreciate all of the support Brad is getting in his first year as the starter. He is still learning as Rich said. He happens to lead the country in points accounted for with 92, is tied for 1st in the country with 14 TD’s and is 2nd in the country with 1488 yards. As his dad and former coach, it frustrates me a great deal when he makes mistakes. It frustrates Brad so much more. Yes he would rather trade all of these accomplishments to be 4-0. This would never be questioned if you knew him. To expect him not to make mistakes is ridiculous. As Rich said, it sounds like OO wants him to be perfect. He will never be perfect. I am assuming that OO is a previous college QB and has the experience and knowledge to criticize one as he did. I personally doubt this as he stated that Brad is “not playing well” (see the above stats), “missing reads”, and “holding on to the ball too long”. These posts by OO went way beyond what this forum should be about. You made this personal and called my son out for not only his play on the field, but also questioned his heart. Again, if you knew him you would never question his heart. As stated before, he took responsibility for his mistakes and continues to put the blame on himself, stating that he put the defense in tough spots and called our offensive line the best in the league.
What I want and need to say to OO about the disrespect he showed my son can only be discussed in person. I will be at the Georgetown game and I am begging you to seek me out, so that we can further discuss my son’s performance so far this year and go over all of your credentials that give you the right to criticize him like you do. My cell phone is XXX-XXX-XXXX. Don’t hide behind this forum OO. Let’s see how much shit you talk about my son in person.
For what it’s worth, Brad played that game with the flu and had a 100 degree fever shortly before the game, but I’m sure OO knew that. Question his heart OO? Really?
I would also like to remind everyone on the forum that although only a few of the same people post on this site, most of the parents and players read it religiously. Again, thanks to all of those that are supporting Brad and the team so far this season, even if it’s been tough so far.September 25, 2017 at 1:41 am #32186
Ok gentlemen. I am not saying all defense-
The defense is in the bottom 5 in all of FCS (Yes it’s FCS, not FBS). I am saying that it is all defense. Geez, what are you watching? After four games, you cite the QB play as the problem. WTF.The offense has to be perfect just to stay in the game let alone win it. Last year’s defense looks like the ’85 Bears compared to this year’s mess. Brad has stepped into the starting role and has played well. Unless he can play LB, there isn’t much more he can do to put this team in a position to win.
Just keep repeating: 38, 46, 56, 65 (51 points/game) and then make the comment SLAM THE BRAKES ON KILLING THE D FENSE. Unfriggin’ believable.

Actually, the defense (553 ypg) is ranked 122 of 123 FCS teams. Good news is Mississippi Valley State’s (602 ypg) is even worse.
Our rushing defense (A STAGGERING 310 ypg) is third worst in the nation. Only MVS and Bethune Cookman are worse.
How bad is giving up 310 ypg on the ground? Thirty-four FCS teams do not average 310 ypg of TOTAL OFFENSE.
So much for the high-powered FCS offenses Objective Observer cites.
Defenses win championships. So far this year, for example, North Dakota State has given up only 103 yards per game — rushing and passing! Illinois State has given up only 156.
(I remember years when Higgins/Lembo teams flirted with giving up 100 ypg rushing. Pass D wasn’t great, but …)
Objective Observer can be as emotional as he wants about LU’s turnovers. (BTW: This is a team game; it’s not all on Mayes or on any one member of the D, either).
Facts are facts and numbers don’t lie: The best offense in the world won’t win many games when the D gives up 553 yards per game.
Good news is Wagner gains an average of only 263 total yards per game (we give up 310 just rushing), just behind Colgate and Georgetown for 105 of 123 teams). Lafayette and Bucknell also sit in the bottom 20 in offense.
Can’t wait to see LU try to stop Holy Cross and Fordham offenses. I guess if they play well for two games they maybe can win the PL.
