I listened to the game on Yahoo sports from my hotel in Korea (3 am Sunday). It sure sounded like some open questions are starting to get answered. The recieving corps showed up across the board as did 1st and 2nd string QBs. Some nice progress by playmakers and solid soph contributions. This ship just might be headed in the right direction..much the the disappointment of our buddies in Easton.
April 19, 2009 at 2:29 am #297Had a great time. 1st I recall O being ahead of D. Db s had a tough day. drwal, gordon zurn artim all looked good good hands very nice speed. Walker looked better than I expected Fitz a work in progress , OL a bit underwhelming but not for size or effort. Qb’s all performed very well. Lum wont beat out Clark but he has more upside than any qb we,ve had for a while. Borda with a better arm and more speed. Boy I cannot wait until Sept, Lbs from top to bottom were super big fast
Oh, did remember to bring sunglasses.
April 19, 2009 at 3:13 am #298Pleasantly surprised by the offense based upon what I had read about the D being ‘ahead’. Yes, the receiving corps showed great hands. A lot of catches in traffic and good timing with the QBs. Special mention to Artim, Drwal and Potocnie.
Somewhat concerned over lack of pressure on the QBs at times. Such luxury in the pocket won’t always be there. But the QB’s showed good mobility in avoiding rush at times, too.
Walker looked strong and Fitz showed a lot of potential in backing him up and Campbell showed some nifty moves.
On D Taylor is still rehabing from knee injury suffered against Lafayette, but hopefully will be ready by September. Impressed with the size of the LB corps–bigger than what hour lines were 35 years ago.
Concern is serious at kicking game. Randazza did not look good to me. The ball does not jump off his foot. Sounds ‘heavy’. While Leo was erratic at times, the ball jumped off his foot and he had 50 yard range. Randazza would appear to struggle to hit from 40–which is not too bad if one is accurate; however, two kicks were blocked from what appeared to be low trajectory, and another extra point hit the upright. Smith did not placekick, but did the punting and did a fine job averaging over 40 yards. Supposedly there is a freshman kicker coming in and by all appearances, the job is wide open. We lost a lot of close games last year, and a reliable kicking game can make all the difference between 5-6 and 8-3. A lot of time to work on this, but work needs to be done.April 19, 2009 at 3:58 am #299Lum was very good and so was Clark. It is nice to have two outstanding QB’s. The wide receivers as a whole were impressive. I don’t recall one dropped pass all day. As ngineer said the place kicking needs to improve or it will cost us come the fall. Two blocked kicks and a missed extra point is not acceptable. All in all, the offense is vastly improved from last year.
April 19, 2009 at 2:59 pm #300On D, Newton and Mihal shone. Newton looks to beat out Cribbs, Mihal backs up Cohen With taylor back in Sept Lbs will be even better. Doukouslis moved from LB appears to be the Rich Owens for this squad, very fast. Flizack reminds me of the Mad Stork when he played in the NFL. Both Browns lookedgood
April 19, 2009 at 7:35 pm #301Only stayed for the first half, as I wanted to get home to watch the Alabama A-Day game. That’s my FBS favorite team.
Both Lehigh quarterback possibilities looked sharp and prepared. I thought Fitz was fine and will be a real contributor. Field goal potential did not look good, even during warm-ups.
Crowd looked to be about 300. At least 2 other varsity sports had home games at the same time, however. Noticed what might be a slight uniform change, white pants. Seemed to be about 10 players on the sidelines in partial uniform. Field was in the best shape I’ve ever seen. Same lousy scoreboard. The snap clock under the scoreboard had at least half its bulbs burned out, but I’m sure they’ll solve that! The dirty water hot dogs from the cart tasted just fine.
This looks to be an above average season ahead.
April 20, 2009 at 12:01 pm #302The white pants were used for the first time at last year’s Lafayette game as part of the the ‘white out’ theme to counter the Leopard’s expected ‘all black’ motiff. Perhaps they’re going to stay with them as opposed to the olde gold pants.
Agreed, the scoreboard needs an upgrade. I’m sure the play clock will be fixed by September, however, the light intensity on the scoreboard itself needs to be helped, especially with the sun shining directly on it.
April 26, 2009 at 1:17 pm #309I hope the white pants stay and change helmets back to white with dark brown LU logo. The gold is putrid looking and you would think they were trying to copy Notre Dame.
I have never liked the introduction of the gold into the uniforms and would like to see the return to the traditional brown and white—remember when they used to be our school colors!!
April 26, 2009 at 11:56 pm #310My opinion forwhat it is worth , I like the white pants as a change of pace but i do not want to go back to all B&W boring Gold adds a nice touch. Give me the gold pants and helmet on the road and white at home. I played in all brown and white. My kids look at the old pictures as if they were from the Stone Age. Of coursethey think I rode a dino to school every day.
April 27, 2009 at 1:55 am #311RichH – I agree that we should keep the gold pants for away games and the gold helmuts overall – IF we go with the Brown & White for the home unis. I also agree that when I was at Lehigh, I thought B&W were horrible colors, but have grown fonder of the old school look as I’ve aged. I’d prefer some type of LU or Lehigh on the golden domes, because I don’t ever want to be thought of as an ND copycat.
April 27, 2009 at 1:49 pm #312Penn State keeps it very simple and classic and this is what Lehigh needs to go back to as well. LU on gold are not Lehigh colors and Brown LU on White helmet is classic. Even worse are the LA Rams swirl on the shirts!!
April 27, 2009 at 4:26 pm #313I think the gold helmets were supposed to have a decal, but they arrived after the start of the season. The team was on a winning streak, so it was decided not to change anything.
The very first helmet decal in the 60’s was of an engineer surveying with a transit. I guess we will not bring that one back.
