Based on what I’m reading in this article, it sounds like a more formal split of Division 1 is all but inevitable.
At first, this sounded pretty harmless – little impact outside of football, where the FBS/FCS split already exists. But by the end, I was really troubled. The basketball tourney won’t likely be affected – all current D1 still play in the same tourney. At the end though, it becomes clear that the new Super D1 schools would be playing by their own rules in all sports. Meaning if the power schools choose to pay stipends to athletes, that will be allowed in all sports in which they compete. I see that as a potentially significant blow to FCS-type schools. Like us. The major already have such advantages, that gap will just grow. Who knows what the Super D1 might decide to allow?
