Relatively error free game. We had a number of chances to score some more points. Dont think it would have changed outcome of game. Lum and receivers did themselves proud. OL pass blocking no sacks. UD DL shut down any runs by us. D was game but outmatched by Devlin. Third period UD simply out classed us.
December 5, 2010 at 1:12 am #2935Delaware was clearly the better team. Devlin is a top flight quarterback. Our guys fought hard and had an outstanding season. Someone has to explain to me why we had trouble running the ball all year. Is it poor technique or poor execution? Our offensive line is clearly outstanding and once again gave Lum excellent protection. So why can’t we run the ball?

The absence of a running game makes life extremely difficult against the better teams. Against a team like Delaware, you need to make them at least make them consider the threat of the run. It would open play action passes and prevent the linebackers getting involved in the pass defense and the safeties from dropping so deep almost eliminating the deep threat. It was surprising the yardage Lum threw for today with absolutely no running game.
The lack of a run game is more curious given Coen’s biggest criticism of Lembo tenure was how the O-line could pass block wasn’t physical enough to run block.
Anyone wonder about Barkett’s future role? He didn’t seem to play much today. Sherman did.
Overall, a great year with no complaints. Looking forward to the upcoming scholarships vote. While Lehigh may never win an FCS title even with them, man I would love to see them send those @###! UD fans home unhappy once in awhile.
December 5, 2010 at 3:25 am #2938Pretty few major errors, indeed, if you don’t count more missed tackles than I’d seen since early in the season. And there were some balls that should not have been dropped; could have changed things around.
First half was pretty good, but could have been better with TDs instead of FGs and a FG instead of an INT. Kiss of death, I thought, was running on third and short on first (?) possession of third quarter. I was impressed at how LU did NOT give up even down four TDs. Lots of class shown by our guys.
LU was outgunned physically. The DEL OL and skill players were the best I’ve seen.
Miscellaneous thoughts:
— Keeler’s effusive arguing with officials, to me, was classless and unsportsmanlike, and set a nasty tone in the stadium. He should have been flagged to get him to shut up. I can’t wait for LU to beat DEL one day …
— I watched parts of a few other games. Best teams I saw: ‘Nova and ASU. I was not impressed with UNH against Bethune Cookman, though BC band was awesome. I’d like to see LU play UNH this time of year. North Dakota State looks good, but beatable by LU.
— I’m picking DEL and ASU for finals; nod to DEL.
December 5, 2010 at 1:14 pm #2939Seeing both Delaware and Nova in person, many similarities. They are bigger and faster pretty much across the board.
Delaware safeties were playing up much of the game to stop run but our receivers did not get behind them at all. Seems that we have not stretched the field enough, I felt so in some other games also. O line for Delaware should get game ball, they really pushed our D line and linebackers. Not many break away runs for Delaware but very few stuffs. Once they got far ahead the D was looking to strip and not tackle. Devlin is the real deal, although he missed a few open throws, he hit 3 or 4 unbelievable tight throws for completions and always found his check down recievers.
Might have been a different game if we set up chip field goal at end of half and complete the TD pass to the FB that was underthrown an dropped. Our D was worn down at the end and probably could not have stopped the Delaware first string if they wanted/needed to score again.
Officiating was good in a hard hitting and emotional setting, although the unknowledgable Delaware fans complained about every call or non-call.
Keeler is and idiot and the Delaware fans sitting around me tended to agree.
Don’t count Nova out with Szcur back and healthy.

The majority of the University of Delaware fans were passionate but seemed to have no idea about what was actually going on on the field. They literally thought every play resulted in a penalty that should have been called against Lehigh. At various times during the game, I kept asking yelling Delaware fans "OK, if that’s a penalty, tell me what rule was broken". I mean, they were going nuts asking for a late hit on the 3rd down play where Devlin ran out of bounds and tripped/slipped on the first down marker.
At the end of the day, I’m very pleased with the way that the Lehigh team played and seemingly never gave up. This team has been to fun to watch all year and took us on quite a ride into the playoffs. In the end, Delaware was too powerful but that didn’t impact our effort one bit.
December 6, 2010 at 6:41 am #2947Congrats to LU on a great season. Good luck to the PL teams next year. Hopefully, they can go further next year.
