KenPom Rankings and Chances of Winning

    LU #57 (9-2)
    BU #250 (6-4)
    LU wins 87-66 (94% chance)

Why worry? It’s only Bryant – an undersized team that loss to Navy (#266) by 10. Heck, hadn’t the Midshipmen lost to Prairie View A&M (#317), Mt. Saint Mary’s (#267) and Northern Kentucky (#244). Just, how good can Bryant be? Well, after losing their first two games of the year to #1 Indiana and #64 Providence, the Bulldogs ran-off four in a row beating Army by 11 and most notably Boston College by 2 on the road. Last Saturday, they put it all together for perhaps the first time this year downing Dartmouth by 13 with 5 players hitting for double-digits. The tireless five logged 161 minutes of playing time in that game and the team sank nearly 51% of their shots, out-rebounded The Big Green by 11 and were near perfect from the line. Simply put, this is a highly capable 6-4 team who is only 2 points away from being 7-3. Wouldn’t they love to pay us back for last year’s 18 point drubbing – a game in which CJ and Gabe combined for 52? What’s more….while we’re looking ahead to #11 VCU, this is Bryant’s VCU. We had better come ready to play.

A bit about the school and its move to Division I sports.

The only way Bryant wins is if the team doesn’t focus and takes them lightly. Coach’s job to impress that on them. They are in the process of creating a very special season. Dropping a home game to Bryant would be akin to dropping a turd in the middle of the Christmas dinner table.

TMH –  I forecast for 6″ of snow in northern NJ plus some family commitments may force me to stay home. Sorry about that. We’ll try to meet up at another game. Of course, there’s the Bucknell affair on 1/23. Have you surveyed the I80 meeting place yet?

Yes, this will be a VCU type game for Bryant, and we embarassed the crap out of them last year.

I was at the game up here and CJ was just dominant, put in over 30 and was draining shots from everywhere.

Get this W and then get ready for VCU, who will be the best team we play all year.

LU65, Sorry you won’t be able to make it tonight. Better to be safe than sorry. They are calling for 1″-3″ here ending about 2:30 so I am still optimistic about going. I’ll try to give a recap if I do.
I have not gotten to scout Rt 80 yet, the holidays have been hectic but I will shortly. Hopefully I can find a good place in Bartonsville. I do plan to attend the Holy Cross game which is prior to Bucknell. Hopefully we can  meet up then.

Look forward to your report, TMH. Extremely doubtful I’ll be there. 4″-6″ forecast looking solid for this area.

Bryant came out stroking it from deep, started 5 of 5 from downtown, at the half we’re down 4.

Bryant has 9 3-balls at the half, CJ has 13 and MM 10 for LU.

BJ doing what he does, hit the glass  on defensive end, has 4 boards already and is always in good position.

Big half of hoops left, let’s go.

What a weak non conference schedule. Not an impressive win in the bunch.

Took a little bit of time to digest this game. I’ll take part of the blame for this loss since Lehigh was winning 7-5 when I took my seat. Over the next 90 or so seconds Bryant hit 3 treys and a layup and suddenly we are down 9. The rest of the blame IMHO goes to the fact that we significantly outcoached. Here is the player by player breakdown.

CJ McCollum…Cj looked just a bit hobbled but played his normal extraordinary offensive game. Here is my problem though. If I had a player who was a likely lottery pick in the NBA draft, I would want the ball going through him nearly every time down the court. That doesn’t mean he has to shoot the ball but in the first half, he never even touched the ball about 60% of the possession. Perhaps it is to promote unselfish play. Maybe it’s to rest him while on the court. When he did become the centerpiece of the offense in the last 5-6 minutes, he was constantly double and triple teamed.

Gabe Knutson…We have all acknowledged that Gabe is a very good post player. The problem tonight was that he only seemed to get the ball in the high post perhaps 1 or 2 times in the 1st half. I couldn’t tell if that was just good defense or if there were simply no plays designed to take advantage of a relatively small team. They began feeding him early in the 2nd half but then abandoned it again. He still rarely leaves his feet.

Holden Greiner… he had some defensive lapses but I still give him the hustle award. He rebounded well, shot well and scrambled after loose balls.

Mackey McKnight…Same critique as always. When he is good..he is really good. Sometimes he still tries to do too much. Tonight though 7 assist and 2 TO.

Anthony D’Orazio…He is not going to give you a whole lot offensively but he hustles. He had 2 nice stuffs.

BJ Bailey…he does not have his offensive game together at all. However, he may techically be the best rebounder on the team and probably played the best defense

The rest of the bench..no comment

Team….we played NO perimeter defense. Bryant seemed to get open 3s at will and they can make them. Although statistically the stats were similar, Lehigh seemed to have to work much harder to get their shot than Bryant. We needed to man up on them tight and it never seemed to happen.

Side note: Even though the referees were not an issue for the majority of the game, they were certainly critical at the end. CJ was called for a walk, I personally didn’t see as time expired with 6 seconds on the game clock. Instead of pressuring the ball, Lehigh played some loose defensive scheme where the guy taking the inbound pass drove straight to the basket uncontested. With 1.6 seconds remaing, either McKnight or Bailey (couldn’t tell from my seats, threw an absolute strike to Gabe under the basket who was molested but no call.

The game is over though and we move on.

How can they let them go end to end for a LAYUP with six seconds to play?!!! No excuse for that. What one can learn from this ‘turd’ is that they shouldn’t be reading their Sagarin/RPI ratings or press clippings, because unless they commit themselves to playing defense they will not be going ‘dancing’ this year. Hopefully this wakes up a few people and Reed can get their attention via this 2 x 4 between the eyes.

Mostly we stood around and watched him go in for layup. Gabe was mugged but hell he played a truly lousy game. Totally ineffective.

Perimeter D was a joke. CJ gimpy which hurt his D and rebounding but still good game. Will never get why Doc didn’t pressure the ball on the inbounds. Seems most of our D tonite relied on Bryant missing shots.
This is one of those loses that leaves a bad taste.
