Navy 1-8Looking ahead? Don’t.
With Bucknell (8-1) invading Stabler on Monday, let’s hope Reed and Co. are not forgetting their first and next priority: Beating Colgate (3-6) in Hamilton (NY) on Saturday. The Raiders, who outscored Bucknell in the 2nd half of their game on Wednesday night, came within 4 points of tying the Bison with 2:17 left to play before Bucknell pulled away – aided by 4 straight made free throws – to win by eight. And, this was at the Sojka Pavillion. As Raider Coach, Langel, said in a postgame interview, “When our best team shows up, and it was the second half today, then we can compete with anybody in the League.”
Let’s not forget that Colgate has already posted home W’s this year against Army and Holy Cross. They also have the league’s 2nd best scorer, Burnatowski (17.0ppg) and 5th best rebounder, Roh (7.0rpg). Like Lehigh, they feature some size (6’11” center and 6’7″ forward) within their experienced starting five which is comprised of: 2 seniors, 2 juniors, and 1 second year man. Yet, as was the case going into the American game, our strengths are our opponent’s weaknesses, i.e., 3-point shooting and turnover margins. And, for a change this season, our rebounding margins are about the same.
In summary, we should post the needed “W” and get on to the much-anticipated rematch with Bucknell on Monday.
This will be our 2nd of 3 games in 6 days. No time to feel sorry for ourselves. BU and others face the same challenge. Actually, this weekend shapes up as the Bison’s biggest test of the year. They’ll first play LC at Kirby on Saturday and then return (assuming they bus home to Lewisburg) to play us on Monday. For us on the other hand, once we endure this 400 mile (roundtrip) bus ride to/from upstate New York (Fri-Sat), it’s clearing sailing the rest of the way with only a brief excursion to Easton left on our schedule.February 15, 2013 at 8:51 am #9456Remain focused gentlemen. Don’t get caught looking beyond the next basket. Good luck.
February 15, 2013 at 10:24 pm #9460Per twitter, BJ made trip to Hamilton.
February 16, 2013 at 7:38 pm #9464Only worse than paying for All Access and having it not work, is seeing that your team is getting blown out…team needs to rebound, typical trap game looking ahead to BU…we’ll see how they rebound but man that would be horrible to blow this one, inexcusable.
February 16, 2013 at 7:43 pm #9465What is up with Bailey? I am trying to be understanding, but for someone with no injury not playing?
You can listen on the Colgate station. http://wkxzfm.com/listen-live/popup/
February 17, 2013 at 1:34 am #9466Can anybody share a game summary? Terrible loss, bout with Bucknell also losing, doesn’t hurt as bad. Story on BB?
February 17, 2013 at 3:21 am #9467According to the Lehigh radio broadcat, B.J. sprained his ankle in practice last night
February 17, 2013 at 5:04 am #9469Previously reported in press BJ missed prior game for “personal reasons”. As for today’s loss, one can only scratch their head. Luckily, Leotards knocked off the Chips at Kirby. Makes Monday night huge. There should be at least 4,000 at this game. If not, something’s wrong.
February 17, 2013 at 12:48 pm #9472Yes, heard ankle as well. Distrubing we got caught looking ahead with this veteran team we have, but it happens I guess. Figured colgate was bad enough that even if we played crappy we would have won, guess again. Unengaged and lack of spirit in 1st half, lot of heart in 2nd half, could have laid down and just got beat by 20 but they fought, good sign.
Missed 1st half cause ‘gate didn’t have all access working properly but we miss BJ, miss athleticism and driving abilities. We again dressed 8 schollie guys.
2nd half was D’Orazio or Knutson, every possession. What amazed me yesterday was lack of MM aggressiveness, I don’t think he shot until final minute of the 2nd half on those two drives with under 15 seconds left, he was really MIA in 2nd half, granted we played well in 2nd half but he wasn’t active as usual. Hope we get BJ back on Monday and bounce back.
Anyway, 8-2 vs 8-2, showdown monday at stabler…agree, if 4000+ plus doesn’t happen we got some big time issues…hoping for 5,000 as I think Bu will travel well.
February 17, 2013 at 1:43 pm #9473Disappointed as everyone else is. We live and die each day with the “3.” Today, it got the best of us (0-8 in the first half and 3-17 overall). That, uninspired/detached play, and poor (again) rebounding did us in. Was hoping to pick up a game on BU with the thought that LC would handle them at Kirby. Just didn’t happen. Now, our future is clouded to say the least. Win out, claim first place in the PL, and head into the post-season NIT (at a minimum) or fall to pieces, end up 8-6, and fail to host a Round One tournament game. Sad to say, it could happen. Looking ahead, I’d surely rather have 5-5 Army’s schedule (CU, AU, HC, LU) to closeout the year. While we rightfully focus on BU and LC, that Game #14 against Army at Stabler could determine all post season matchups.
February 17, 2013 at 2:45 pm #9474I am worried about this team. They played inspired basketball when they first lost CJM, but lately that run has worn off, and I think we all realize it is tough to do it night in and night ouwithy hour your superstar. Add in the recent loss of BB and it becomes just too much. If BB doesn’t play tomorrow, I don’t think we can beat Bucknell. We need his scoring, defense and added help on the glass.
What has become evident is that neither this Lehigh team or Bucknell is not strong enough to roll the rest of the conference. Bison continue to get no production from the PG spot and that is tough to overcome on certain nights, especially when they go up against solid PG play like Tony Johnson or Mackey. It is no longer a given that these 2 teams will meet in the PL final.
February 17, 2013 at 4:01 pm #9475Nice effort by Laff yesterday to upset Bucknell. Sorry to see our boys did not capitalize on the opportunity. Hate to say it but without CJ and BJ on the court I’m not too excited about Monday night. These 10 minute scoring droughts are rough. We’re looking like a JV squad ..
February 18, 2013 at 4:01 am #9479We really must work Muscala as in the past couple games. Chips not getting anything from PG as noted above. Appeared to be one diminsional against Laughyette. If BJ plays we win.
February 18, 2013 at 7:08 am #9480Appreciate your optimism, ngineer – but I don’t see it happening. Honestly, I think we’re gonna get blown out in our own house. Maybe the numbers are just catching up to us – can’t shoot 3s like that forever. But the weaknesses are showing now. You just can’t give up the boards like we have been and expect the run to continue. The first half turnovers were appalling too. Mackie had a bad game, plain and simple – never attacked until the last 2 mins. Love this team – but the tank is looking pretty dry…
February 18, 2013 at 2:20 pm #9481I see a bounce back effort tonight. I’m not saying a win necessarily but I don’t see us getting
blown out.I think BJ comes off the bench for 15-20 minutes tonight.
The 3’s will have to be falling, because that’s how we’ve been winning all year. Like it or not
that’s who we are -
