HOMECOMING
It’s been a long wait, but finally after 380 days are guys are coming home having posted wins over BU to capture the PL Championship last season, Duke to shock the nation, and Robert Morris to say we belonged as the #5 seed in this year’s NIT Preseason TIP Tipoff. You can almost forgive the L’s to Xavier, Baylor and Pitt along the way. Now, it’s back to the friendly confines of Stabler tomorrow night where we own (almost that is) the competition. I’m sure LU’s Game Notes will have the figures to prove that. Check it out when published. One thing I do know is that our senior leaders CJ, Gabe and Holden are out to make it a four year sweep in opening night victories (see below). I can only hope the Lehigh Valley fans, students and area alums turn out in big numbers to show their appreciation.
Opening Night @ Stabler in the CJ Era
11/18/09 W over Quinnipiac 79-71
GK 4 pts. 5 reb.
CJ 22 pts. 2 reb.
11/15/10 W over Wagner 73-59
GK 13 pts. 9 reb.
CJ 20 pts. 11 reb.
HG 9 pts. 2 reb.
11/28/11 W over Quinnipiac 86-75
GK 19 pts. 4 reb.
CJ 23 pts. 3 reb.
HG 11 PTS. 8 reb.
Fairfield’s Starting 5
The 2-1 Stags have started the same 5 every game and, if the past is any indication of the future, we can expect to see their 7-foot tall freshman import from Croatia, Josip Mikulic, anchor the post tomorrow night with Keith Matthews and Maurice Barrow, a pair of 6’5″ Juniors, at the 4 and 3. Mikulic has been impressive in the early going – at least when you look at this 3-game averages of 8.3 ppg, 4.7 boards in 21.7 mpg. Yet, he didn’t score in their one win – that over Penn – in which he committed two fouls in his 10 minutes of playing time. So, the jury is still out. But, one thing is clear – he’s not afraid to go long with 12 deep attempts to his record this year. He’s made five. The team’s high scorer is 5’11” senior guard, Derek Needham. He leads the team in field goal attempts (40…nearly twice the nearest shooter) and scoring (14ppg). He’s also second in assists and steals. CJ quickly comes to mind. At the point we can expect to see Desmond Wade, a 5’8″ RSr. First off the bench should be 6’3″ sr. guard Colin Nickerson. The six eat-up 85% of the available minutes.
Clashing Styles (KenPom ranking shown in parentheses)
Tempo
LU 69.6 (45th)
FU 64.7 (269th)
Assists/FG Made
LU 44% (282nd)
FU 66.7% (21st)
While our KenPom strengths of schedule differ widely (LU @ 19 and FU @ 134), it’s still revealing to look at the performance numbers:
LU FU
FG% .426 .402
3FG% .424 .365
FT% .721 .780
Rebounds/Game 30.3 34.0
Opponent Rebounds/Game 41.7 33.0
Turnovers 11.7 15.7
Chance of Lehigh Winning
Ken Pomeroy sees it at 77% with the final being 70-62. Sounds about right. I’ll go 82-60.

November 18, 2012 at 10:19 pm #8052This is a 4-team pod. I presume the Penn-Fordham game is at 6 PM.
November 18, 2012 at 10:36 pm #8053Thank you. I didn’t realize the games were all in our building. And by the way, I listened to your Niagara game here in Allentown on WWKB (Buffalo). Very impressive. I’m not sure the Bison should not have been the pre-season favorite for the Patriot league.
November 18, 2012 at 10:46 pm #8054Bison certainly playing well now. Long way to go but we must improve to beat them this year.
November 19, 2012 at 12:23 am #8056Bison the favorite, they have a DI frontcourt and backcourt! And use 12 scholarships!
November 19, 2012 at 12:24 am #8057Really crappy no internet tv coverage it appears, brutal.
