Commentary
Following an opening day 30-point loss to Bucknell out in Lewisburg, the Midshipmen of Navy have done nothing but win. That’s five in a row by an average score of 73.2 – 61.6. Two of those W’s” came on the road against the Terriers of Boston U. and the Raiders of Colgate. Yup, the same Colgate team that took down Bucknell by 11 on Saturday night. Navy, pegged to finish 10th in the preseason poll is making believers out of many who follow the sport – including the League’s coaches and ADs.
Navy’ s latest win came against our “friends” in Easton by a score of 87-61. In that game – a true team adventure – the Middies got scoring from 9 of their 15 players how saw action. The subs, in fact, eat-up 30% of the minutes giving the starters much needed rest. Navy dominated the Leopards in all facets of the game to include: FG% (.561 to .418), 3FG% (.529 to .333), Rebounding (41 to 28), and Points in the Paint (48 to 20). One stat that I particularly love and credit so many wins to each year is: A/FG Made. Navy, acting a bit out of character, showed just how it’s supposed to be done dishing out 26 helpers on 37 baskets – good for a 70.3% rate – some 16% higher than their norm. To put that 70.3% stat into perspective, consider the fact that Michigan, the nation’s top A/FGM team @72.1%, stands at 16-2 on the season. Got to think there’s a strong correlation between W/L Record and A/FGM.
Navy takes “team-ball” to new levels in terms of shared responsibilities, with five players averaging between 8.8 and 12.7 ppg, four pulling down between 3.8 and 5.8 rpg, and 10 getting 10+ mpg. It should pose a significant challenge to us tomorrow night. Oh yeah, Navy’s season-long 14-5 W-L record is tops among PL participants.
When it comes to “PL Game Only” stats, we stand tall with the Middies and dominate in one area – the 3 –point shot.
