HC wins 71-65 (71%)January 17, 2014 at 11:34 pm #13139After the seeing the past few games, including live at Loyola, I’ll share my thoughts, for whatever they’re worth (not much).
I feel like TK has really struggled against guys his own size, who are also athletic. On both ends of the court. I agree with other comments I’ve seen here that he’s going to need to develop physically. I don’t know if you can “train” hops – but if you can, he needs some. This might sound like heresy, but at this point, I think JG has been more effective on offense AND on defense.
Earlier discussion we had about focus still holds. There seems to be something wrong with pre-game prep, to my untrained eye. The guys just don’t seem ready to play. Cold? I dunno.
MM is incredibly up and down. Early in the game, he’s not aggressive enough. If he establishes his threat to drive early, it will open up dishes. When he tries to “kick it in” late in the game, everybody in the building knows what’s coming. The last drive in the American game is the obvious example, but it’s been true often. He’s gonna go to the bucket, and everyone knows it. It works sometimes anyway – which is a credit to his ability.
I also strongly agree that we need to get the ball to CS, in a position to shoot, more often. I’m still not a huge fan of his drives to the basket, but he has been a killer with this jumper. Even when he’s creating it himself. He needs more shot attempts.
And so does JG. His FG% is nuts. We need to see if it can stick, though. He is 100% more effective in the paint than everyone else on the team at this point. To paraphrase Keyshawn, give him the damn ball!!January 18, 2014 at 1:36 pm #13144Here’s hoping/assuming neither team will dominate the boards and that some combination of TK/JG/JC can cancel out Dave Dudinski and Malcom Miller. If so, maybe our superior 3 pt. shooting going up against their average, at best, 3-pt. defense can lead to a victory today. All that together with a recent improvement – some might say revelation – in our zone defense and you just might see a win up in Worcester this afternoon. Hey, us ol’ guys can hope, can’t we?!

January 19, 2014 at 5:49 am #13153Hoping tonight is a combination of shots not falling, long road trip, and start of new semester. Energy and effort seemed to be nonexistent and this years team’s typical second half push was just not there tonight. Need to put this one behind them and move forward (ugly lose).
On a side note, witnessed CR out play the Alexander kid in PA vs. MD all-star game. Alexander was pretty good for HC tonight. Still excited to see CR’s future unfold at LU, going on record now that a some point in his career he has an impact, kids a winner!
January 21, 2014 at 10:13 pm #13213Never has there been a game with so few post event comments. I guess everyone is just anxious to move on. I can’t blame them. But, anyway, here’s my vent.
I can’t recall ever being happy to miss a Lehigh basketball game. But, a little snow and a one way distance of 150 mile was all my wife had to see to cancel what had been a visit with family up north following a 3-hour stop over at the Hart Center. LUHoops00, sorry I let you down. You had to sit through this game alone.
So, how bad was the game? Where do you start? How about the fact that we made 16 FGs in 40 minutes of playing time? That’s 1 every 2 ½ minutes. I think LUHoops00, StablerBum, TMH, Lehigh90 and jimk72 – with me behind the bench – could have done better. Consider our senior leader and esteemed point guard went 1 for 11 in 27 minutes. Then there’s TK – a non-starter for the first time in his career. Our big guy – our future some have said – found the net once in 17 minutes for 2 pts Not to be outdone, another regular starter, JC, chipped in for a deuce. Three men – six points – in a combined 75 minutes of playing time. Or, how about the fact that we once led this game by six and then stood by (committed 2 TOs, 2 PFs, missed 3 layups, missed two 3-pointers, missed two 2-pointers, and a free throw) and watched the Crusaders go on a 7 minute/16 pt. run. to put the game out of reach. Again, a first half meltdown! Our heads were never in this game. Can you imagine what the final score might have been had it not been for AP’s 13 (9 on three consecutive bombs in the first half), SW’s 9 and CS’s 6? Others did either nothing to impress (JG and MS) or were, sadly enough, invisible again (DC, SC, CR, and GP). It must have been a long bus ride home. Five losses in six games – 4 by a combined 10 points and then this one! Had it not been for a 2OT win at Colgate on Day One, we’d be sitting at 0-6.
It’s hard to believe that we’re really this bad. It was just a month ago (12/21/13) that we beat a solid Quinnipiac team by 11 (69-58). The Bobcats are presently ranked 120th with wins over Vermont (96th), Iona (115th), and Manhattan (74th). In notes following that game, I came across this Message Board posting by LUHoops00 and now take the liberty of highlighting a few key thoughts: “Really big win heading into break, no doubt about it, I was scared of this one with young team coming off long layoff and flying home to their families the next day. Credit to staff and leadership, because we were ready to play. Agree with 65, we lost rebounding but the fight and determination is so much higher then it was out of gate this year. Our young guys are battling and their compete level is much higher than it was in November, really happy about that.”
There is only one way for this team to go. And, that’s up. It must start tomorrow down in Annapolis. Of course, I’ve said that before.
January 22, 2014 at 12:50 pm #13229To depressed 65, I was at the game and am now 0-3 on the season having seen losses to minny, Bryant, and HC.
The discouraging thing is it seems many players and coaches have taken step backwards. We got to figure out who we are – zone or man on d? HC press bothered us, why don’t we with our athletes press more?
Still lots of time, I still believe, we can win 3 in march….but we need to start learning what it means to win games, and now more then ever we need senior leadership? Mackey has to lead, he deidnt at HC, was frustrated and had some bad moments.
