Didn’t we just hire Joe Knight as Director of Basketball Operations? This article indicates that he took a job with UNC.

A university in North Carolina, not to be confused with the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Confusing, to say the least. New guys, not great pedigree, Chestnut Hill College and Elizabethtown? They play basketball there?

Good catch, 90! I misread that as University of North Carolina.

I wonder what our budget is for assistants? It must be ridiculously low. Something along the lines of 5 subs from Goosey Gander per week, a free room in M&M, and a beat up Schwinn.

I’m a novice at this but we are not really talking assistants here. What are the responsibilities of Director od Basketball Operations and Graduate Manager. Neither can recruit and do either really get involved with coaching. I viewed the former as more of an administrative position. Personally, I think that Joe Knight would have been better suited as an assistant coach

OK, thanks TMH – sounds like no big deal then. The Director title sounds impressive, and I think I read more into the role than is really there. The Joe Knight thing does seem strange to me, still…

Very strange to me for a few reasons:
    1. Knight and reed go way back and relationship was good obviously.
    2. Joe was on twitter for a while indicating he was part of staff.
    3. Wonder if joe wanted assistant job when it opened and was pissed he didn’t get it?

Agreed this isn’t a huge deal but certainly an oddity when one considers the reed and knight relationship goes back to high point.

IMHO, it is possible that Joe was overlooked because the assistant AD wanted his son to have the job.

I really don’t think this is a fair assumption. Kyle was working full time in basketball for an organization that churns out D1 assistants like an assembly line. His path was proven and common.

Joe was working a non-basketball full time job with some AAU coaching and skills development on the side.

Taking away playing careers, nepotism, and being an alum and Kyle’s resume was much more typical of a D1 assistant than Joe. Beyond that I have no idea why Joe decided to leave his post as DBO (another typical path to becoming a full time assistant).

Also, I forgot to add that I think it is awesome that there is an analytics nerd involved with the program. Advanced analytics have been the “it” thing in sports for a few years now, but my guess is very few mid-majors have a dedicated analytics guy.

Lastly, here is a very comprehensive job description of a Director of Basketball Operations for those interested in what that role really is – http://www.hoopcoach.org/profiles/blogs/director-basketball-operations-job-description/

Thanks for the link, SBum!! Very informative!
I wonder how it pays? In spite of the fact that I have very little in terms of direct qualifications, I think I’d like that job! Lots of adminutia, but very plugged into what’s going on, and I’d assume travel with the team!! :-)

That’s a good job description for a DOBO. It’s also useful to know what a DOBO cannot do:

    – Make any recruiting visits
    – Evaluate potential recruits in person
    – Have contact with recruits except in conjunction with official visits
    – Do any coaching/instructional activities.

I would think there is more to this story. I think he was hired 7/13/13, so he was on the job only about 2 1/2 months. Also, I was curious to see a press release of his new position somewhere but I did some looking and I see no announcements anywhere of his new position in NC.

    As to what it pays:

    At Kent State – $29,000
    At JMU (woman’s) – $27,000
    At DePaul – $25,000
    At Iowa – $60,000
    At BYU – $40,000
    At ECU – $35,000
    At NMSU – $33,000
    At Buffalo – $32,573

So, at Lehigh, not a lot.
