I don’t suppose it matters that much. He is a walk-on. We had one who led the state in scoring, another one who was a McDonald’s All-American and another who was the starting PG for U16 Greek Olympic basketball team. They rarely saw the floor. I’m pretty sure Davis will take on the same role.
    Just saying!!

He can’t be too shabby a player if he made the team. He was probably some living group’s ringer for intramurals last year. Back in the day our house showed up for a game at Taylor gym (1971 roughly). We were the antithesis of a jock house. The other fraternity showed up with six guys. Including John Hill. Not a fun time at hoops intramurals.

I’ve actually got a soft spot for the walk-ons. I think it’s probably the most thankless thing you can do in college, in most cases. Those guys work their butts off, right alongside the scholarship guys, with little hope of seeing the floor – with the exception of 2 minutes of mop-up time in a blowout. They definitely contribute – running the “scout team”, challenging the starters in practice, etc.
I didn’t really appreciate this until a couple of years ago, when Cory Goodman kept a blog through a season called “Life of a Walk-On”. It was always a fun read, and his attitude really impressed me. He’d talk about the imaginary games he played in during warmups, keeping track of his shooting for a “score”, and the hopes of getting into a game that were usually dashed.
Here’s to JJ and all walk-ons!
