Quietly, the Express-Times/Lehigh Valley Live group has dropped Lafayette and Patriot League sports coverage. In light of this fact, the need for a Lafayette Football Nation could not be greater.

I don’t know the exact connection between the Express-Times and the Harrisburg Patriot news, but before the creation of Lehigh-Valley-Live Website both newspapers shared the Penn-live website (there are many other newspaper websites with the same format(and logon) XXXlive (Michigan, Alabama, Oregon, NewJersey{the Star Ledger})

The Patriot news for a long time, up to maybe 15 years ago, covered a lot of “local” college football. 8-10 reporters, (some would cover Fri nite football first) They would have 3 guys at Penn State. 1 at another local big time school, usually Pitt or Temple, maybe once a year at Md, Syracuse, Rutgers, Army). 1 for 1AA, mostly Bucknell, also, Lehigh, Laf, Penn, Nova, Del- usually some one went to Leh-Laf. 1 or 2 for PSAC 1-3 for D3. Then they decided to cut football coverage back to 6 reporters, all cover PSU.

But it has degenerated since. They decided to go to 3 days a week. Tue-Thur-Sun, copying the New Orleans Times-Picayune. I think I kept subscribing only because of the comics. But they screwed up when I took an extended vacation, so the hell with them. Heck of a thing when the capital of Pa no longer has a daily paper.

As we all know the fact that we are using this forum (the internet) explains why newspapers are a dying breed. And won’t be around much longer. Its a shame because we need factual reporting, but the internet makes its financially infeasible, at least on the local/regional level.

Pennlive and LehighvalleyLive use to have huge forums discussing Pro Sports, College Sports, and High Schools sports, National, State, and Local, Politics, and non political news. most every Boro or County over 5000 population had a forum. The HS sports included every PIAA sanctioned sport, down to an including Cheerleading(the newest recognized sport) an non recognized HS sports like Hockey, Gymnastics and water polo. The HS forums on football, wrestling and basketball had 1000s of posts every year. Unfortunately, many of the most vile posters bragged about not subscribing. We would, today, suspect some as trolls from the other side of the world. (well maybe not the HS sports posters)

Are newspapers a “dying breed” because no one wants to pay for them or their online versions or because they keep cutting content?

It’s a nasty chicken and egg situation.

If we want content, we either pay for it or the colleges, pros, high schools, etc., will feed us what they want us to hear … and so will our government. Sad state of affairs.
