Lousy with links but Press of Atlantic City has feature article on BJ ‘s return to basketball and his life over last 4 yrs. Explains a lot.
January 4, 2012 at 3:24 pm #4417Thanks Rich for heads up. Hopefully this works.

January 4, 2012 at 3:40 pm #4418This does explain a lot, but I’m puzzled that Brett didn’t see the need to explain any of this to Lehigh fans. Second, it’s puzzling that the media in the Lehigh valley – including those providing team coverage – did not deem it necessary to ask any questions or provide any context to loyal fans.
There is a lot of bellyaching (justifiably) about low fan turnout to games. While fans have responsibilities to support the team when possible, coaches and media have responsibilities too. I don’t think it is too much to ask that context is provided so fans are not left to speculation and rumor mongering about player status..
January 5, 2012 at 7:27 am #4426The kid has been through a lot. Maybe Reed was protecting BJ’s privacy or was he just another player who Reed found no use for once he quit. Only Reed really knows. I wish BJ the best. Having seen kids who have suffered loss of parents, there is a grieving process that takes time. Add to this his own near death experience.
January 5, 2012 at 2:46 pm #4430He is still on the team and he played a few minutes against MdES – although not the minutes one would otherwise expect for a kid with his accomplishments. I can understand Brett trying to "protect privacy" – to a degree but I can NOT understand a complicit media which fails to ask the obvious questions ..
January 5, 2012 at 5:32 pm #4436After reading this article it makes situation much clearer. I don’t think we can count on him as being a factor during his Lehigh career. He is taking it one year at a time, which means he might be off the team at any point. Is he on a basketball scholarship at this point?
January 6, 2012 at 9:09 pm #4448I don’t believe BJ has ever been on a Lehigh basketball scholarship. I am unclear now what, if any, his reported concussons had to do with the interruption in his play. From the article’s perspective, perhaps nothing and that was all a ‘red herring’.
January 6, 2012 at 9:39 pm #4449If he was never on scholarship, then what were all the details that had to be taken care of before he was allowed to even practice with the team? I can’t think of any issues that would preclude a walk-on from practicing/playing.
Also when he first transferred his local paper said the following:
– – – – –
B.J. Bailey begins his academic and basketball life anew today.
The former Holy Spirit High School basketball standout planned to start classes at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., today. Bailey will attend the Patriot League school on an NCAA Division I basketball scholarship. Bailey originally attended Boston University but left the school in December.
"It feels real good," Bailey said of his decision to attend Lehigh in a telephone interview from the school Sunday afternoon. "I had no clue what I was going to do (after leaving Boston University). To have made a decision takes weight off my shoulders." . . .
As is the case with all Division I transfers, Bailey is not eligible to play immediately. He will sit the rest of the season and the first six games of his sophomore season. He will be eligible to play Dec. 22, 2010.
Bailey will be able to practice with the Mountain Hawks right away.
"It’s tough to sit a year," Bailey said. "I’m going to try to use this year to get better."

January 6, 2012 at 11:23 pm #4451Agree with 90, contributions from Bailey seem like a real outside chance at this point, as he is year to year and maybe the passion doesn’t burn as bright as it once did pre-near death experience.
It would appear that the reported "concussion" issues were a cover-up, as it seems he just didn’t want to play last year once he was eligible off of the 1-yr sit-out rules….the story keeps getting more and more confusing, perhaps never will there ever be a player at LU more talked about with less impact and a more confusing situation…
January 7, 2012 at 3:12 pm #4455From his preseason tweets BJ seemed psyched about finally suiting up. Think we are reading much too much into article. He is maturing after a terrible event. 2yrs worth of rust does not flake off in a few games. Give him some time.

I could not agree more. If he has passion, he will perform. If not, he will enjoy his LU experience.
