    Erratic effort so far
Play calling has been mixed – first down runs mostly stuffed – TD to Bragaleone the first surprise play in a long time. No passes to fullback or tight ends.
    Defense unable to complete tackles
Special teams awful in giving up punt and kick off returns
Lack of size and toughness on defense
    Recruiting ?

Defense is bad. Special teams getting worse. Refs called back 3 Colgate TDS.

We should thank the officials for this one which is never normally the case in Hamilton. Three TDs called back. The PI call was especially suspect. I thought for sure it was on the DB.

    Wow!

I’m glad the D gets a feel-good game (despite giving up 537 yards and 38 points, but only 10 in the second half). They got huge breaks with refs’ questionable calling back of two TDs(special teams had one called back, too).

But that’s football and it’s a credit to this team to stick with it and pull it out. Walker (key fumble recovery at end) and T(monster name) had great games on D. Those two guys seemed to fly around the the second half and inject much-needed energy into a D that often looks like it’s playing on its heels or confused.

Overall, though, the D continued to make way too many mistakes and allowed a freshman Colgate QB (18-22, 316, 2 TDs) to net better stats than the incredible ones posted by Mayes, who came up big time (22-30-297, 2 TDs).

This is the first game I’ve seen this year from first snap to last. This team can win the PL, but the O will have to be balanced like it was today (and the way I predicted it would be — and will be throughout the PL, if play calling and teamwork is as good or better than today).

But LU has no room to make mistakes.

I can’t say enough about offense. Definitely A grades at every position. Mayes threaded the needle successfully a few times and made big plays when he had to. The O-line and RBs were awesome, which, as Mayes said after the game, really took the pressure off him.

My opinion about the weakness of defensive coaching (scheme, LB and secondary) over the past few years was cemented today (though they did keep their kids mentally upbeat/confident in the game today). It’s nothing personal — but numbers do not lie. I know high school coaches who demand better fundamentals. I’m sorry, but this has gone on for too long and at the end of the year it needs to change.

Mish back at P was huge. Kickoff return coverage and kickoffs are huge weaknesses. I wonder if there’s any strategy for our kicks when we can’t get touchbacks. If there is, I don’t get it.

I was impressed by Mayes’ leadership in his postgame interview, giving credit to D. He said something like, “Screw the yards, screw the points; they got the stops.”

That was the bottom line today.

    Congrats on a team win!

The defense should not feel good about this game given that 2 offensive TDs were called back to prevent another 50 spot. Fumble recovery was a cliche: Blind squirrel-acorn, law of probability. The defense is horrible. Not one member of that staff can return next year. What makes it even more frightening is see what Wagner, Penn and Yale did today. These are not juggernaut offenses.

It really is a shame because this offense is at least as good as last year’s. Imagine the productivity of the O if the defense was getting some 3 and outs and TOs.

Wagner was shut out 38-0 by Duquesne. Penn lost 42-21 to Central Connecticut. Princeton, Villanova and Yale did well.

If LU had a middle of the road FCS defense, team would be undefeated, even with all the TOs vs. Wagner. Instead, LU gives up 533 ypg, by 31 ypg worst in the FCS. Fordham is 121 of 123. CCSU was 112 before playing Wagner.

LFN, a win is a win and was badly needed. The offense was terrific. Their ability to keep the faith and battle back all day was impressive.

Special teams and defense were poor. Special teams gave Colgate a short field all day, missed an extra point, and looked like Keystone cops on at least one of the LU kick off returns (fair catch running towards your own goal line and almost colliding with the return guy running in the proper direction). The defense was a suspect PI call and a lineman downfield penalty from giving up another 50+ plus points.

What are the fans saying that isn’t true? The fact is that we’re now in league play for the remainder of the season and fair to mediocre may be good enough to win the league. Lafayette sitting at 2-0 is evidence of this.

Congrats to the team on a first win on the road at Colgate. We got this. Stay focused the rest of the ride. We got lots more to prove.

The Patriot League is down this year so why not an imperfect Lehigh team as Champion?
Defense and special teams have issues, but the balanced offense Lehigh put out there Saturday is good enough to run the table

Probably true. O needs to operate consistently and D can make a few stops per game and minimizes big plays.

Looks like my pre-game talk helped. Andy lives to coach another day.
