 We surely lost to a much better squad today. D gave it all some nice plays but too many big plays. O was embarassed and dominated. OL I thought was our strength , they were decimated by Nova. We cold not run at all.
14 yds for our leading rusher? Lum, given no run attack ,was OK, but 3 ints. He has to get his decisions in line with his talent. Very disappointed with our effort today on O.

I was at the game today. With Coen, the issues are always the same issues.

He wanted to establish dominate lines and implement a smash mouth approach on offense. He killed Lembo for recruiting pass blocking linemen who couldn’t run block. Guess what, he has an O-line that can pass block but can’t run block. Then he doesn’t recruit a bruising type of running block. This team was at its best when it had a dominate running back (Jean, Pugh, Thompson).

The defense is OK except for the secondary who still hasn’t learned cover or play the ball in the air. Can you say coaching? Why is Wilcher still here?

Why doesn’t Barkett play more? If you’re going to continue to run between the tackles, he would seem to provide a little more punch.

Jean, Pugh and Thompson were not ‘bruising’ backs. They were all small and quick. We haven’t had a ‘bruising’ back since Abdullah.
O became very predictable without the run game. To not make 2d and 3d downs with short yardage numerous times was embarrassing. We should do fine within our own League and the IL, but unless we go to scholarships, we stop banging our head against a wall.

The precursor to today’s game was the fact that one COULD NOT BUY A FREAKIN’ PROGRAM AT 12:15 P.M.!!!!!! They ‘ran out’???!!! When there were only about 3,000 people in the stadium at the time. Talk about piss poor planning. Must be the same yahoo who sent out the brown colored wrestling season ticket application that one could not write on and send in…Not exactly the type of management that gives one confidence.

They actually did have programs and were selling them in the stands at about 1:00. I asked what happened and was told that they didn’t realize there were additional programs. This however, doesn’t change the validity of your premise about poor planning.

What is the story with the score board? They obviously spent some money changing the lighting so that you can see it on a sunny day. My question is why spend money on the old score board, when it really should be replaced with a modern board containing a replay screen.

Lum took far too long on his reads. A number of throws behind receivers and not catchable. Three picks … If Drake DB’s could catch they had 3 or 4 as well. We need work at the QB spot and on the O-line to run the ball.

Something is to be said for "bigger, faster stronger" and better. This season may very well shape up to be one where we beat the Drakes, Princetons, Fordhams and Georgetowns handily and lose to the bigger and faster programs of Nova and New Hampshire. Will that be seen as a good season or a bad one? If that is seen as a good season, then I suggest that we are striving for mediocrity. This season, the winner of the Patriot league could very well be a very average team. Troubling thought.

My rant for years with Lembo was my fear of a slide into mediocrity. I saw that 1st hand in the 60s and lived thru how long it takes to recover. Hindsight with Pete, I guess I should have been happy with 8-3 every year.

Coen like pete a very good recruiter. by now he should be a better HC. I think he is improving, hiring Dave great move. Players put out great effort but as yet we do not have near the number of athletes as Nova et al.

I think Lum is closer to being a very effective qb. Has the tools but not yet consistent decisions. As footballgal noted, he is still too slow at times with his reads and late on delivery.

Even with schollies, unlikely we will ever have the same depth of talent as CAA top teams. Heck VaTech couldn’t beat JMU picked 4th in CAA preseason. But , i look at PSU, a very good team, that was dominated by Alabama a much better team . PSU still a good team. Likewise, I think LU can be a good team and the experience of Nova should help raise their level of play for the Princeton game.

Rich, although I really felt we would compete better vs Nova, I share your optimism about the season, . Since I was at the game, I can clearly say that Nova was the superior team. No lack of effort on our part, and even without the mistakes we made, we would have been beaten.

Now, if we don’t handle Princeton this Saturday with some ease …

We should beat Princeton, Saturday, but I would hesitate about it being "with ease." New coaches, New systems…I won’t be surprised if this is fairly close, especially for the first half until adjustments are made, etc. PLus, the Tigers have two weeks of film on us. I wouldn’t expect a blowout, but winning by 10 or more points.

One of the ways Higgins teams’ beat bigger, stronger, faster opponents was by being mentally tougher and more disciplined. My recollection is those teams were rarely penalized, the QBs rarely threw ridiculous passes into freeway traffic, there were few kickoffs or punts recovered by the opponents’ kicking team because of stupid mistakes, etc. Mental errors were few and far between.

Things have been different the past few years.

Kevin’s tenure as HC was a time to enjoy even in memory. Lets remember that his start was far from seamless the 1st 3-4 years. Once he had his recruit classes in and sytem ingrained, it was the best of times. One of the best men I’ve ever known and a great coach. Andy certainly not there yet but I do thonk he is improving. OOC schedule may hinder a much better record. 3-2 would give us a shot at a good year
