Why does Lehigh’s baseball team have half of its roster composed of pitchers – 19 or so in all?
    How many actually play?

LU had 19 pitchers who got into games last year. Of those, 14 pitched in six or more games. Eleven pitched in 10+ games. With 5-6 games a week and 54 overall, coupled with the reality of pitch counts for young arms, you need a lot of pitchers. Plus it is common to have a few pitchers miss 1+ seasons due to Tommy John Surgery or other surgeries. And finally, a few of the pitchers are likely walk-ons or frosh who aren’t really ready to pitch in tough games.

You can never have enough pitching! Especially when you play four games in two days.

A few years back we had 22,if I recall correctly. As 137 noted, Leary throws most of them during the season. The strategy has worked pretty well for Lehigh.
