    Not too disappointing, though…

Middletown’s (N.J.) Shilique Calhoun was a basketball player with a football problem. He loved hoops, but college coaches loved his gridiron game even more.

"I had offers to play basketball from Wagner, Monmouth, St. Francis (Penn.), and Lehigh," Calhoun said proudly.

While Calhoun’s offers to play basketball were impressive, they could not compare to his offers to play football.

"I visited Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Rutgers, Michigan State, [and] I had offers from all of them," Calhoun reported. "I had additional offers from Boston College, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Louisville, North Carolina State and Syracuse."

With that offer sheet, the 6-foot-5, 235 pound athlete knew his future included a helmet and shoulder pads. When it came to picking the logo on that helmet, he made his decision on January 11th.

"I committed to the Michigan State Spartans."

Hard to fault the kid for going to Michigan State for football. But imagine, though – he could have been a great forward for the basketball team at Lehigh, too. I could only imagine the battles coach Reed and coach Coen would have had in order to land this kid

Of course if Reed had given him a scholarship, then he wouldn’t have been allowed to play football – which would have prevented any fights.

Bucknell’s Stephen Tyree had at least three or four scholarship offers from BCS-conference schools for football – although not from as an impressive a list as the above.
