A 2 pt and a 5 pt L. MU was a shoulda won. Otherwise a decent OOC.
O Is likely the most explosive unit in the PL. Nothing to bitch about :).
D a work in progress. Better than last w yrs without doubt. At times even quite good. Big plays are still a big issue as are edge runs.
Watched game again. The sense I get is that D lacks consistency more than any other issue. Unit seems to lise focus on some plays giving up big plays. When they fly around and swarm we are solid. Guys just dint do it on every play.
STs have taken a big step back the last couple of games. Howard being out probably one of the causes..
Next week crucial for any shot at PL title.Captioing the obvious )October 2, 2016 at 3:43 pm #28510Although I have not not been an advocate of our defense for several years, so far this year I have seen a significant improvement over last year. They continue to give up a couple of big plays/game and that needs to be addressed but consider this.
Excluding FBS opponents
Monmouth scored
34 vs Delaware St
7 vs #11 Charleston Southern
41 vs FordhamVillanova scored
40 vs Towson
42 vs Elon
31 vs LafayettePenn scored
17 vs Fordham
37 vs DartmouthPrinceton scored
35 vs Lafayette
48 vs ColumbiaAnd to repeat Yale had 15 possessions against our defense. They punted 7 times, were intercepted twice, stopped on downs once and the end of the game while allowing 4 scores, 2 of which were via the forementioned big plays.
Our defense is certainly not elite nor our strength but it is also not the proverbial doormat that many here make it out to be. The PL seems to score a lot of points and give up a lot of points, The PL season should be a barn burner but we are absolutely capable of beating them all.
October 2, 2016 at 5:16 pm #28511Say what you must TMH to make yourself feel better.fact is our D ranks 77 in total defense out of 122. Thas well below avg. And ranks 113 out of 122 against the run. So yes, they are the doormat we make them out to be. We give up 28 pts a game. The O is carrying this team and making you guys feel good about a putrid D. Watch the game again and see how horrible the tackling is, especially the Dbs, mainly the safeties n 17. Glad they got 42 in there Sat. Colgate will exploit all this once again, especially the QB run. The O will have to score everytime they get the ball or we lose
October 2, 2016 at 5:36 pm #28512Exactly what is it I said do you feel is wrong?
1.)Significant improvement over last year? Check the 2015 rankings.
2.)They continue to give up big plays?
3.)The data I provided on each of our opponents?
4.)Our defense is certainly not elite?
5.)Not being the doormat?
We are ranked higher than Colgate and Holy Cross, just slightly behind Bucknell which is #72. Fordham and Georgetown give up about 20 less ypg. That hardly cries doormat to me. Haters gonna hate though.
As for Colgate, please read what I said. The PL seems to score a lot of points and give up a lot of points. It’s gonna be a barn burner but please try to enjoy the ride :-).October 2, 2016 at 7:20 pm #28513Have you watched college football over the last couple of years
Football is changing dramatically- concussions- I think I said this before they are limited to contact- rugby tackling is taught- this isn’t just a LEHIGH concern it is a Football concern overall!
ALL TEAMS GIVE UP BIG PLAYS- notre dame, penn state, georgia, tennessee, florida state-and that is just from yesterday
I was always taught a win is a win-
I still feel who ever wins this week- will be the patriot league champs
October 2, 2016 at 9:06 pm #28514Glad you guys feel this way. If we lost a couple more games everyone would be all over D. Even Coen realize this. The O has saved us. Doing what they do gives us a pass. I don’t want to hear about D next week if we take it on the chin. Colgate D is worse than us. We have a chance! We can run the table if O doesn’t have a hiccup.

You’re having another solo argument. We all want D to be better as do you. Your issue is that they aren’t good enough yet. Doubt any of us disagree. Just acknowledging that they have improved over last year. Just an obvipus takeaway from games so far. Gate and Fordham will measure if we have improved enough.
Try viewing our O stats also. Might cheer you up a bitOctober 2, 2016 at 11:19 pm #28518Ok, we give up 28 points a game instead of 35, you guys are right! Our O is much better than last yr minus the first 2 games. No need to look up O stats, ive stated they are our saving grace. If we had avg O we might be 0-5. we are a doormat on D. 113 of 122 in the run game, the most important aspect of football. The only reason we decent in the pass game is because teams don’t have to, please acknowledge that. Our D is horrible. I’m tired of you guys talking like our D is sufficient, reminds me of Coen saying our team “competes!” We might win PL title, but the D won’t help us out. Especially running a nickel D as the base, who does that?
October 2, 2016 at 11:43 pm #28519Just one note a number of 3-3-5 use the nickel as the base D. Perhaps it works for some. Not that thrilled with it. We did do a lot of Rover at Yale. Neither set has done enuf to stop big plays. Dont think D scheme is the major isdue.
October 3, 2016 at 12:17 am #28520have to agree with LG on #17, would like to see somebody else in that nickel spot, not sure who but #17 does not have the size
October 3, 2016 at 12:51 am #28521There’s no question the defense is better than the last two seasons. Is it good enough? We’ll find out next week.
Injuries are becoming a concern. McCloskey didn’t play yesterday. We’ll be without Q next week and without Johnson for a half.
This against a Colgate team that can score as well as Lehigh. They put up 55 on Yale.
Last year’s game was 49-42. I expect a similar game, but hopefully a different outcomeOctober 3, 2016 at 1:33 am #28522I’m old and can’t remember but weren’t people crying out here that Montgomery should get more playing time. He is #17, right?

[/quote]somebody may have been, but not me, and for all I know he may be the best option for the nickel back, but he is undersized and getting run over
October 3, 2016 at 2:47 am #28526What is the word on Q? From my vantage point in the stadium, I will be surprised if he plays again this year. The crack of the hit echoed in the stadium. I don’t recall ever being in a stadium that fell so silent, so quickly. Prayers for a full and speedy recovery, but I am very concerned.
October 3, 2016 at 2:49 am #28527Only word has been that he is on the road to recovery. I take that to be good news given the circumstances.
