It has been conspicuously quiet here regarding the QB “situation”.
What we have here is a very, perhaps eerily, similar parallel as last year with the QBs.
In 2015, Shaf goes down against FU and Mayes directs the show for the next 2.5 games – with some impressive results. Shaf gets healthy just in time for the Colgate game.
In 2016, Shaf gets hurt vs. Princeton and Mayes directs the show vs. Yale – with literally record-setting results.
In 2015, despite the strong showing by Mayes, Coen decides to start Shaf…and plays him the entire game. Shaf had a very strong game, but ultimately couldn’t deliver a game-tying/winning drive. Who knows if the outcome would have been any different, but Andy never even tried to have Colgate guessing by throwing Mayes out there.
In 2016, Coen has already telegraphed that Shaf will start, again not even trying to keep Colgate slightly off-balance.
While I would make a different choice, I don’t fault Andy for going back to Nick. BUT, this is where I get frustrated: why the he$$ doesn’t Andy at least create a little uncertainty and leave the door open for having to prepare for two QBs.
I know many folks don’t like using dual-QBs, but Shaf and Mayes have decidedly different attributes and it would be great to exploit both.
BTW, Mayes undefeated as a starter…..
October 4, 2016 at 6:34 pm #28559Mayes is no threat running the “read option” as evidenced by team’s 2.8 yards a rush at Yale.
October 4, 2016 at 7:31 pm #28560524 speaks volumes no matter who the opponent is. Shoulda pulled a Belichick and waited till game day to announce starter, and MAYBE play both????
October 4, 2016 at 8:25 pm #28561no guarantee Shaf is the starter, he is expected back, same as last week; wink, wink
October 5, 2016 at 12:11 am #28566Matters little who the QB is, this is not a good Colgate team at all. Lehigh should win by 40.

AnonymousColgate looks extremely vulnerable to a passing offense. Mayes cannot move. He looked slow. Our third string center could have thrown for 400 yards against Yales defense…They were horrible. Shaf brings a lil edge that this teams needs. Nobody has mentioned how we give up all these points and yards in the first half and then we stone these teams in the second half. Decent coaches make decent changes at halftime. Im not saying Bot should be hunting for NFL jobs but I like when coaches adjust as the game goes along. Bot is a slow starter but then he adjusts prettty damn good. I predicted we would win 5 in a row and we are at 3 but unfortunately I do not think we get this one. Think they can score with us and our kick off and punt coverage teams have been horrible. Colgate beats us in a close one with special teams being the deciding factor. I hope Im wrong!!! GO LEHIGH
October 5, 2016 at 2:20 am #28575Mayes is not slow, don’t know where u guys get that from. He just does what qbs do and stand in the pocket as he goes thru his reads. He can run. Saw him throw a pick in practice to #17, and yes he walked him down. So either 17 slow or Mayes kinda fast.
October 5, 2016 at 3:07 am #28576No matter how good you play, if youre replacing an injured player, you’re out once that player is healthy. Regardless of QBs, both of which are talented, our D needs to get better because 3 or 5 wins in a row won’t win us a championship because won’t stop Phazan Odom from Fordham
October 5, 2016 at 4:51 am #28578Gonna guess that you meant Chase Edmonds. Yes – he will be a problem.
October 5, 2016 at 3:19 pm #28580FWIW
Harris in for Jones at CB. Christiano 2 behind Casey.
Style points aside expect Shaf to start. Would like to see Folmar use Mayes as a change of pace wild card if O stalled. Hasn’t been for last 3 but Gate has a better D. Their strength is vs run. Pass D shaky.
D has to read Gate’s run option a hell of a lot better. Same O they have used for years.
Holland RB out for Nell. Option stalls without him. Dont know if he will be back for us.October 5, 2016 at 3:50 pm #28581
FWIW
Exactly, why a change of pace/pass-oriented QB would be useful. Very few teams could potentially deploy this type of duo.
October 5, 2016 at 5:23 pm #28584Change of pace to screw up Gate D prep.
At media today Andy was asked who would start. He answered Tom Brady.

Yeah!!
Maybe AC does read this board after all.
October 5, 2016 at 6:55 pm #28586Thought they might of used #17 at corner since he has game experience and put someone else at nickel. A tall order for 12 who has little game experience at corner. They will go after him, hope he’s up for the task.
