Rey wins University World Team Trials
Lehigh All-American Zach Rey added another major accomplishment to his 2010 season by winning the 120 kg/264.5 lb. weight class at the U.S. University and Junior World Team Trials May 29 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Rey went 3-0 in a challenge tournament, and then defeated University National champion Jarod Trice in a best-of-three series to earn a spot on the University World team.
Rey, who captured an EIWA title and placed third at the NCAA Championships in March, was one of three Mountain Hawks to compete at the University and Junior World Team Trials last weekend. Rising sophomore Robert Hamlin won three of his four matches to place third at 84 kg in the Junior Freestyle challenge tournament. Rising junior Brandon Hatchett went 1-2 at 74 kg in the University National challenge tournament.
In addition to qualifying for the University World team, Rey, who will be a junior in the fall, placed seventh at April’s U.S. Senior Freestyle Open and is eligible to compete at the U.S. Senior World Team Trials, June 10-12 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
