I have read numerous articles since the scholarship announcement, but there is still one piece I am missing. I hope someone here can help me out.
My understanding is that every school will be able to grant up to 15 full merit-based scholarships a year. Up until this point, we have been bringing in classes of 22-30 with all need-based aid. What I don’t understand is how the scholarships will hurt depth and make our classes smaller as some articles have stated.
Hypothetically, if say 6 players worthy of a full schollie also qualify for half of tuition need based, could we not offer them 1/2 merit based and 1/2 need based aid for what would amount to a full ride? Additionally, if there are players who have no scholarship offers out of high school (some of which are the type of kid we gladly take now), couldn’t we conceivably give that kid even a 1/4 scholarship to entice him to come as a sort of “project”? Take a kid like Gulyas this year who is going to Villanova as a preferred walk on. I bet he would take a 1/2 schollie, or even a 1/4 schollie over a walk-on position.
Lastly, if a player leaves the program, we can offer his scholarship to someone else in his class correct? Either a transfer, or a walk on that has earned a scholarship, or a player on 1/2 scholarship that deserves a full ride?
I guess my primary question boils down to, if you can bring in 25 kids with no merit based money, how is it harder to bring in 25 with 15 tuitions worth of merit-based money? The lower regard kids at the end of the class didn’t have merit-based money then, and they won’t have merit-based money now. What’s the difference?
