As we await notes …
Our common opponent was Wagner, who Stony Brook beat 38-10.
But a look at the numbers show the game was much closer.
Wagner outgained SB 310-309, but lost the turnover battle 3-0. (We lost turnovers 5-2 to Wagner in a 37-20 loss.).
Wagner’s Ryan Fulse gained 131 yards against SB, compared to 103 vs. LU. SB held Wagner RB Denzel Knight to 29 yards. He had 152 vs. LU.
SB had 244 yards rushing vs. Wagner (Gowins 131, Liotine 79). We are going to have to do better there … SB QB Carbone was 12-20 for 115 vs. Wagner.

LU has legit shot of winning if it limits mistakes.
November 21, 2017 at 7:17 am #33005Some other fun facts:
Stony Brook allows only 100 yards rushing per game. That’s 12th in nation.
Lehigh has played against other top national rushing defenses: Yale (3), Villanova (4), Colgate (20), Holy Cross (25).
SB will battle Brags, who has the second-most rushing yards in the nation (1,313, just behind Josh Mack of Maine, 1,335, and ahead Fulse of Wagner). Mack got only 84 yards on 30 carries Saturday vs. SB.
Stony Brook has nation’s 19th best turnover margin. Colgate, Villanova and Lafayette all rank 28th.
TOTAL DEFENSE: Stony Brook ranks 21st. Compare that to Bucknell (12), Yale (13), Colgate (20) and Lehigh (115, up from 123, and last, a few weeks ago).
TOTAL OFFENSE: Stony Brook ranks 82nd (Lehigh’s 5th), with 330 ypg.

Anonymous35-21 Stony Brook. They love to run. We have gotten better at slowing the run game down but they will eventually bust big runs and the flood gates will open. I think they will take our run game off the field and make us one dimensional. There secondary is not bad and I think they can man up and stuff the box. It’s sad we will never have a home playoff game. I do feel this would be a huge advantage for us but it will never happen. I think time of possession will be 40-20 Stony Brook. This will wear out an already suspect defense. Could get ugly late!!! Lets get the rings sized and call it a day!!! If we think 5-7 and a Patriot league championship is a good year then we need to rethink things…Go Lehigh
November 21, 2017 at 7:14 pm #33013Notes up. No major changes.
We have faced equally good Ds this year. Expect we will score. Enuf?
D has its work cut out for it. SB runs behind a large physical OL. A very vanilla O that relies on grinding you down on the ground. QB a game manager not an independent O weapon
We may be able to slow them down for a while but they will wear us down. One note tho SB does commit a good number of stupid penalties at least according to their fansNovember 22, 2017 at 12:49 am #33016This could go either way. SB goes three deep at RB behind big O line. We’ve been better against run lately but this is best team we have faced since Yale. Colgate only ran Holland once against us. Can’t turn the ball over if we’re to have any chance
November 22, 2017 at 1:21 am #33017Long Island NEWSDAY article:
Stony Brook draws LEHIGH in first-round playoff game.
FCS top seed James Madison awaits in the second round.
The Stony Brook football team will play in an FCS postseason game for the first time since 2012 when they face LEHIGH at 2 p.m. Saturday at LaValle Stadium.
If they win the first-round game, the Seawolves (9-2, 7-1 Colonial Athletic Association) will play top-seeded James Madison on Dec. 2.
The top eight seeds in the 24-team tournament have a first-round bye and the other 16 teams open Saturday. The only game at a neutral location will be the national championship game Jan. 6 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.
“We’ve got 19 seniors, so they’re certainly excited to get another game of college football under their belt,” coach Chuck Priore said. “They feel like we accomplished obviously one part of what we wanted to do, which was sitting in that room today and hearing our name called, and it’s the start of the second season.”
LEHIGH (5-6) earned an automatic playoff bid by winning the Patriot League title. The Mountain Hawks went 5-1 in the conference and scored at least 34 points in each of their final six games, but they have allowed 39.4 points per game this year.
The Seawolves are coming off an emotional 20-19 victory over Maine, a game that ended on a 35-yard “Hail Mary” touchdown pass from Joe Carbone to Harrison Jackson. Stony Brook, which won its final five regular-season games, went 5-1 in games decided by eight or fewer points.
Carbone has completed 59 percent of his passes for 1,995 yards, 20 touchdowns and three interceptions and the Seawolves have averaged 28.0 points per game. His favorite target, Ray Bolden, has battled injuries throughout the season but finished with 66 receptions for 780 yards and nine touchdowns. He left Saturday’s game with an ankle injury.
Senior Stacey Bedell, a Floyd graduate, has been the featured back, totaling seven touchdowns, 694 yards and 5.1 yards per rush. Donald Liotine added 561 rushing yards, eight touchdowns and tremendous special-teams work.
The offense continued its strong production even after losing All-American left tackle Timon Parris (fractured fibula) for the season Oct. 28 at Richmond. The Floral Park product could be the first player drafted in program history,
The Stony Brook defense, which returned nine starters from one of the top-ranked FCS defenses last season, held opponents to 19.4 points per game.

FCS Playoffs: LEHIGH at Stony BrookAP
Nov 22, 2017 at 10:45a ET
FCS Playoffs First RoundThe Matchup – LEHIGH (5-6) at Stony Brook (9-2)
Kickoff – 2 p.m. ET Saturday at Kenneth O. LaValle Stadium (12,300) in Stony Brook, New York
Coverage – ESPN3
Series – LEHIGH leads 1-0 (only meeting: LEHIGH won 25-2 at home on Sept. 4, 2004)
Players to Watch – LEHIGH: QB Brad Mayes (259 of 407, 3,553 yards, 28 TDs, 12 INTs), RB Dom Bragalone (230 carries, 1,313 yards, 21 total TDs), WR Troy Pelletier (95 receptions, 1,198 yards, 9 TDs), DT Tyler Cavenas (46 TT, 8.5 TFL); Stony Brook: QB Joe Carbone (178 of 298, 20 TDs, 3 INTs), RB Stacey Bedell (137 carries, 694 yards, 7 TDs), WR Ray Bolden (66 receptions, 780 yards, 9 TDs), Rover Tyrice Beverette (79 TT, 9.5 TFL, 4 PBU).
The Skinny – LEHIGH, which lost its first five games, is the second team in playoff history to qualify with a losing record (Lafayette also was 5-6 in 2013). The Patriot League champ has a high-octane offense (fifth in yards per game at 476.8) that features Mayes, Bragalone (seven straight 100-yard outings), Pelletier and wide receiver/kick returner Gatlin Casey, but the Mountain Hawks struggle to stop opponents, especially in the run game (232.2 yards per game, 37 touchdowns). Stony Brook has had one of the nation’s better defenses in recent years, but the Seawolves’ offense is much improved behind junior Carbone, who threw 20 interceptions with only five TDs in his first two seasons. Bedell hasn’t been full healthy, but Donald Liotine usually gets double-figure carries as well.
Up Next – The winner plays at No. 1 seed James Madison (11-0) in the second round Dec. 2.
Prediction – LEHIGH can light it up, but Stony Brook, which has won a game in each of its two prior playoff appearances, wants a shot at CAA champ James Madison.
Stony Brook, 31-28.November 22, 2017 at 10:38 pm #33023Did not Rhode Island qualify winning the Yankee league at 5-6 many years ago? like 30 years.
November 23, 2017 at 2:53 am #33024I think we need to gamble a bit and let our secondary do a lot of man and commit to stopping the run with 7-8 in the box. Our secondary is young, but athletic and if we can get good pressure by doing a lot of blitzing (run/pass) the secondary need not have to stick with receiver longer than 3-4 secs. While SBU has a solid D, we should still be able to move the ball and put points on the board. If we can hold SBU to the 30’s we have a shot. If we an miraculously hold them under 30 we have a good shot of winning. Big distinction in the Wagner comparison, as the only common opponent, is the turnovers. TO’s have led to a number of losses this year. Keep it clean, we’ll be in it.
November 23, 2017 at 3:25 am #330251970, vs Delaware, the Five Horseman team. our D, 4 DL, 5 LB, 2 DB.
Blue Hens came in #1. We won like 35-13, but it wasn’t that close
But I expect Sea Wolves throw a lot more.

This game should be much closer.
I’m impressed at how LU’s talent matches with SB, which has good OL, D and a diverse corps of RBs.
D playing well enough, but missed FG and fumbled kickoff (second in two weeks) really hurt. They are probably difference in game. Hopefully special teams plays Grade A ball the rest of the way.
Stony Brook isn’t Lafayette, which was up by 10 last week. But … I hope LU players know they can pull it off if they (and coaches) execute. Talent is there …
