I was on this topic last year, but gave it a few games before posting. Not this year. The performance on both sides of the ball vs. Monmouth was PATHETIC!!!!
We should have known the game was going to be bad when Shaf (ONCE AGAIN!!!!) overthrew the wide open receiver on the first half. Nick is NOT a passer. He has no touch whatsoever on the long ball. He is a glorified running back. Sorry if no one wants to hear this, but too bad. Lehigh has not had a long-ball game since Lum departed. Bring on Mayes.
Now on to Andy. AC has given us two playoff appearances in 10 years – that’s 20% for you math majors – and based on game 1, that percentage will drop. All the excitement and talk about an improved defense was just marketing. The team had no spark, no emotion, and no performance. Yes, the O left them to dry on the field, but we have no run-stopping capability. Just pathetic.
Sometimes change is good so I’m officially starting the Coen must go thread.
I’m certain some of you will call for patience and state that I am overreacting. I say go for it. I look for improvement, progress and learning. None of those things have been evident in the last 3-4 years. Andy is on the hook for the turd in the punch bowl at the 150th. He’s a good man, but LU needs a new direction. We all lambast our rivals over on College Hill for sticking with Tavani, but we’re deluding ourselves. With each passing year, it is clear that Cecchini was responsible for the short run of success that Lehigh had.
Time for a change.
There I said it.
Yes, I’m worked up.
Have at it.
September 3, 2016 at 8:52 pm #27754How many playoff appearances would there have been if Cecchini wasn’t brought back? The only reason Coen is still here is Cecchini’s tenure bought him extra time and goodwill. Who here thinks that was Coen’s decision? After watching him bring back a DC that finished in the bottom 10 out of 100+ teams the last two years, you will never convince me it was Coen’s idea to hire Cecchini. Most of his problems is his inability to properly staff a team.
He has been given more than enough time to prove he can do this job. It hasn’t happened and is becoming painfully obvious it will never happen. It is time the AD pulls the plug. Count me in as one that says COEN MUST GO!
While I am in the camp that thinks Mayes is a better passer and an overall slightly better option at QB, benching Shaf should come with a bit more restraint. He showed what he can do last year. He has the ability to change games at the QB position if the game plan emphasizes his abilities. That being said if improvement doesn’t come or he shows regression, we have the luxury of having a very good Plan B on the sidelines.
September 3, 2016 at 9:18 pm #27758Monmouth game plan was perfect, stop the run and don’t worry about the deep pass

Anonymouscoen does not play. the boys do and they sure did not do it well. if we come out next week and play well is coen now a genious. i think the players need to man up and grow a pair and stop pointing whos at fault. i think we will be fine after digesting what i just saw. 6-4.

So the coaching is irrelevant? They recruit the players who didn’t show up. If Monmouth hadn’t had so many penalties, this would have been a 20 point loss. This defense has the same deficiencies as last year. Can’t get stops to get off the field. Tackling is abysmal.Where are the six wins coming from? And even if it is possible, we’re looking at another 6-5 season! Yeah😣 Another mediocre season.
I’m was on the “it’s time for a change” bandwagon after the 2014 season and the fiasco in the Bronx. Nothing since then has changed my mind.
September 3, 2016 at 11:18 pm #27766The first half was among the worst ever. Recall all the talk about the great offense that would be piling up yardage and points? This was all dreamland stuff.
The team was unprepared and the coaching and play calling were pathetic. The QB is overrated and lacks the ability to throw down field. Everyone knows that and especially the opposition. He relies on scrambling because the game plan is in disarray and “air Lehigh” has disappeared. The pass in the first series that was over our best wide receiver’s hands by over five yards lad the way for a scant 50 yards total in the half. MU should have had over 40 points but for “gift penalties”.The Road to Greatness indeed.!
The coaching staff is in over its head –
September 4, 2016 at 12:57 am #27773In 2012 Lehigh overachieved because it “knew how to win”. Since then, we have not had that instinct, especially in closer games. Not sure where that x-factor went, but we need it back.
When did Cecchini depart?
September 4, 2016 at 1:01 am #27774
is coen now a genious
I can honestly say I have never said that in 10+ years.
September 4, 2016 at 1:12 am #27777
When did Cecchini depart?
Cecchini was at Lehigh from 2010-2013
Coen’s career record 68-46
w/ Cecchinni – 39-9
w/o C – 29-37
Record the season before C arrived 4-7
Record the first season with C – 10-3
Record in C’s last season – 8-3
Record in the year after C’s last season – 3-8
Playoff appearances with C – 2
Playoff appearances w/o C – 0
Patriot League championships w C – 2
Patriot League championships w/o C – 1 (1st year post Lembo)Cecchinni changed the landscape of Lehigh football from the sideline. As a matter of fact, it changed immediately. So try to tell me again it’s the players and not the coaching.
September 4, 2016 at 1:32 am #27781Unbelievable…are you talking about the same Dave Cecchini who is 5-17 in his 1st 2 years at Valpo (1-9) last year and is currently losing 40-10 in the 3Q to Illinois St?
Are the posters on this board the sames ones who blasted Coen, Folmar and Shafnisky after the 1st game last year and then then seemed to get selective amnesia by the end of the season when our offense produced some of the best #s ever included the teams mentored by Chick.
Get a hold of yourself. This is going to be a long season.September 4, 2016 at 1:41 am #27783
Man, that is one very interesting (and damning) analysis. I hope Sterrett is looking at the same facts.By the way, wonder if the university is looking at the rather dismal attendance at today’s game. Perfect weather for a home opener. A far cry from when we used to draw 8,000 to 10,000+ and be the flagship for the league.
September 4, 2016 at 1:52 am #27784I expected a close game against Monmouth. I was hoping we’d come out ahead by 3 because of the home field advantage.
Some bad coaching decisions that ended in points the other way. Flashes of last year’s offense the second half but not consistent after only 4 weeks practice.
Talk of changing out Shaf and Coen are nonsense after one game with an evenly matched opponent. We got a lot of season ahead, let’s stay positive.September 4, 2016 at 2:11 am #27789Shaf is a good football, hell he is a dam good football. Just not a good thrower down field. We came out scoring on short and intermediate passes. He’s not being put in a good situation having him look down field that’s for Mayes in the future. Why bring back Knott if your not gonna use him?? They threw about 2 passes down field that’s Monmouth I’m talking about. 1 INT and 1 bad throw. They bubble screened us to death. I still think we need 4 dos line man to be successful. We get gashed with 3. Watching Alabama play. KEEP CALM. I’m just saying if you play 3 they better Hogs and not piglets. Defensive secondary was surprisingly not bad today. I would love to see Mayes get a few series. I agree let’s stay positive
BUT,I WANT WINNERS!!!!

Sometimes you need to understand how to read statistics.
The Cecchini Years (2010-2013)
2010 23.3/ppg opposition 19.1/ppg
2011 32.5/ppg 20.2/ppg
2012 30.3/ppg 21.8/ppg
2013 31.64/ppg 31.09/ppg2015 32.27/ppg 35.27/ppg
Since Chick was only the OC, explain to me again how we would be better with him back.
Final score today Illinois St 53 Valpo 13
Chick is now 5-18 at Valpo as a HC (1-10 over the last 2 years).
This offense will be very good after kicking the rust off in the 1st half of the 1st game. 4 drives for 3 TDs in the 2nd half.September 4, 2016 at 2:55 am #27793Next week should be a great test for the Lehigh offense. If they don’t bring their “A” game to the Maine Line it won’t be pretty. ‘Nova held Pitt to 261 total yards (86 yards rushing!) today in a 28-7 loss. One of Pitt’s TD’s was a 96 yard KO return. They held Fordham’s high flying offense to 7 points the last two years. Lehigh will have a tough time scoring more than 20 points next week.
Can a defense win a low scoring slugfest? The Wildcat offense is not that imposing. Monmouth’s skill guys are better…
