Lehigh’s late rally against a shorthanded American squad couldn’t be completed as the Eagles defeated the Mountain Hawks 69-65 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Bender Arena. Senior Alex Ross hit a game tying three-pointer with two-tenths of a second left in regulation, but American, led by junior Michelle Kirk who scored a career-high 32 points, was able to outlast the Brown and White in the extra minutes. With the loss Lehigh falls to 13-3 (0-1) and gets its eight game win streak snapped.
A tough loss, but maybe not unexpected at the hands of the team picked No. 2 in the PL, American. Real Time RPI only predicted a 2 point win for Lehigh and it was so close that it seemed like a good prediction.
Prosser (13 points, 10 assists) Smith (7 points, 11 boards) and Gratch (13 points, 12 boards) played their hearts out, but American’s Michele Kirk was able to carry the team on her back (31 points!!!) for the win. While Ross struggled (2-13 from 3-point range), she did hit the tying shot to send the game to OT.
The good news is that we get the next two games at home (where, of course, the Lady Hawks have a 25 game win streak) and the Real Time RPI didn’t fall too much (60). The bad news is that it’s against Navy (9-7) and Army (6-8), who won’t be easy outs at all (the preseason #3 and #4, I believe). Important for the Lady Hawks to get both of these, hopefully.
