Now that the news of our 1st recruit is here…I’ll start with stats for last season

Appears to be a pro-typical PG. Efficient scorer byt doesn’t put up a ton of shots. I love the nearly 3 to 1 A/TO ratio. I look forward to following his senior year.

Some more info from his AAU team page:

    Tyler Jenkins
2014 PG 6’2″ Hamilton Southeastern High School Fishers, IN

As a junior he started every contest, averaging 9.8 points, 4.5 assists, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals per game. As a sophomore in 2011-2012, Tyler worked his way into the rotation on a Hamilton Southeastern team that spent most of the season at #1 in the state and in the top 20 nationally. In the last two years, Tyler has had the experience of competing against Big Ten recruits Gary Harris (2013 B1G Freshman of the Year/2012 Indiana Mr. Basketball/McDonald’s All American) and Zak Irvin (2013 Mr. Basketball/Indiana All-Star) day in and day out. Tyler is a captain, and has offers from St. Joe’s (PA) and Florida Atlantic. Cornell has offered him a roster spot and have him as their #1 guard recruit in the class of 2014. He carries a 3.98 GPA and scored a 1600 on the SAT.

Offers from: St.Joe’s (PA), Florida Atlantic, Cornell, Lehigh, Boston University, Penn, Gardner-Webb

Interest from: Columbia, St. Bonaventure, Fairfield, Virginia, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Wake Forest, William & Mary, Old Dominion, Davidson, Brown, and Stanford.

I think his lack of shots may have more to do with playing on a stacked team than a pass first mentality. It looks like the Mr. Basketball award for the state of Indiana went to teammates of Tyler’s for the past two seasons. I’ve seen the St. Joe’s offer reported numerous times, including by his AAU coach, so I trust that it was legit at one time. Also, I believe we went on an unofficial to UVa and attended their elite camp, so there may have been some real interest there as well. In any case, 8 offers by the end of July is a pretty solid haul. BU was recruiting him quite hard, and they have been great on the recruiting trail recently, so that also gives me some optimism.

Yes, I agree that the St. Joes offer seems to have been legitimate. St. Joes got a commitment from a good PG last week (Shawar Newkirk), which likely caused them to rescind the offer to Jenkins – if it was still out there – which may have been the impetus for the LU commitment.

Anyway, looks like a good addition.

Looks like his points went up in aau ball this summer as I read a ton of tweets about his games and he was alway mentioned as one of top scorer. Playing against top competition in practice and in season in a good bball state is a plus. Maybe he was under recruited to date because he played with a top team and two mr basketball winners who stole accolades and who he always took a backseat to. He could be in line for a big senior year and maybe we struck at just the right to time. St joes offer does appear real, a positive for sure. His aau coach called him the best leader he has ever coached, and saw he played well in big spots in some tournaments last month.
