It is no secret that one of Lehigh’s biggest areas of concern this season may be at NG. Ricky Layton has graduated and our DL has shown some softness up the middle. Enter Tyler Cavenas.
What attributes should a good NG possess?
1.)He should be big. At 6-5,he will be as big as any other DL on the team. At 270, he will be the heavier than any other DL on the team by 10 pounds. His newspaper currently lists him at 280.
2.)He should be agile. In addition to being a 1st Team AS OL in PA, he was a three year starter on his basketball team which won the District 11, Class A title. Tyler scored 32 points and 12 rebounds in the title game.
3.)He should be strong. He won District 11 titles in both the shot put and discus. His discus throw of 149-9 in his junior year would have been 6th in the PL.
4.)He should be smart. No matter the physical attributes, it is a big jump from the small HS level to FCS football. The adjustment is both physical and mental. Tyler just graduated as the the salutatorian of his class.

Here is a great article on his signing with Lehigh.

He is a game changer. The jump to D1 from Class A HS is enormous. Impossible to know how long it will take him to adjust. When he does,he will dominate.
Sad note TJ ‘s Mom has passed(per his facebook). Her illness was the cause of him missing 2nd semester.
