Lee Kurfis To Showcase Talents In South Carolina All-Star Bowl

Lee Kurfis To Showcase Talents In South Carolina All-Star Bowl

WR Lee Kurfis literally came out of nowhere last year on the Patriot League and national scene.

Hard to believe now, but going into the 2013 season, he wasn’t a member of the preseason all-Patriot League team, despite playing very well in several games his junior year when WR Ryan Spadola, now with the NFL’s Miami Dolphins, was out with mono.

Maybe it was the unorthodox style of running.  Or maybe it was because people forgot about his sneaky quickness to break for the ball.  But after Kurfis almost singlehandedly helped Lehigh overcome a three-score opening-game deficit to Central Connecticut State, Lehigh Nation certainly knew that Lee had the potential to be a great one in the annals of Lehigh history.

Now of course, the rest of FCS Nation knows who Mr. Kurfis is, as he finished atop the FCS on average yards per game (122.8), 3rd in FCS in receptions per game (9.0), and finding his name on the ECAC All-Star Team, the AP FCS All-America team, Sports Network All-Star Team, the College Sporting News All-Star Team, and, most recently, the College Sports Journal All-Star team.

Now, he’s headed to the campus of Furman University to showcase his talents in front of NFL scouts.

Coen Taps His Merchant Marine Coaching Background To Find Lehigh’s Offensive Coordinator

Coen Taps His Merchant Marine Coaching Background To Find Lehigh’s Offensive Coordinator

Picture this.

You’re Lehigh head coach Andy Coen.  Your offensive coordinator, Dave Cecchini, tells you he’s taking over at another Division I program, Valparaiso.

Dave is not just any old coordinator – Cecchini identifies as a critical part of Lehigh’s offensive success over the last few years.  Mentor of WR Ryan Spadola, WR Lee Kurfis, QB Chris Lum, QB Brandon Bialkowski, QB Mike Colvin.  Filling those shoes will not be easy.

What you do is give a call to some guys that you know, to find names, like the 35 year old head football coach at Kutztown, Drew Folmar.

Folmar and Coen both served as coaches at the Merchant Marine Academy at King’s Point ten years apart, Coen as offensive coordinator in 1992, and Folmar as quarterbacks and receivers coach in 2002.  Andy put in a call to the folks there.

“The people at King’s Point spoke volumes about him,” Andy told me, “and then as he took over the offense at Kutztown I certainly noticed his success.”

Andy never kept his eyes off of Drew’s coaching career, and it’s a big reason why he’s now Lehigh’s offensive coordinator today.

Eleven Months Away And #Rivalry150 Excitement Already Very High

It may seem hard to believe now, but there was a time when people thought that taking the Rivalry outside the state of Pennsylvania was a horrible idea.

A few days ago, Lafayette announced that they had sold out their alumni and faculty ticket allotment for the much-anticipated game at Yankee Stadium on November 22nd, 2014.

Lehigh, who has more alumni, sold out their similar allotment on November 25th, 2013, meaning that this edition of The Rivalry will break attendance records.

The game which some people thought might not sell 16,000 tickets will, in the most conservative estimates, will easily top 40,000 ticket sales, with the prospect of the Yankees opening up more seats later in the season.
