Lehigh had one of the best offenses statistically in all of the FCS last year, excelling offensively in pretty much every facet.
Look at the statistics page for FCS last year.
Rising senior QB Brad Mayes, 4th in passing yardage. Rising senior RB Dominick Bragalone, 1st in rushing yardage with 1,388.
Both Mayes and Brags return next year, and huge things will be expected of them for certain.
But the spring is about finding out who’s stepping up to the plate to keep the train rolling.
There’s little doubt that, barring injury, Mayes and Bragalone will be lining up in that first offensive possession vs. St. Francis (PA) at Murray Goodman this September. But the 2017 offense is so much more than those two guys – the Mountain Hawks will need to replace the best receiving tandem ever to suit up at Lehigh, and will also need to replace the fiery leadership on the offensive line that, at times, seemed to will this team to their Patriot League Championship last year.
This Saturday, we get our first peek.

Spotlight On: QB Brad Mayes
Rightfully, much of the focus of Lehigh’s football coverage this offseason has been on the offense. That makes sense; after all, Lehigh ranked near the top of every receiving and rushing category in 2016.
Yet most of that coverage has been on guys that have been on preseason FCS all-American teams (senior WR Troy Pelletier, junior RB Dominick Bragalone) or probably should have been on more of them (senior WR Gatlin Casey).
Oddly, the focus on those all-League caliber players have shifted the focus from what could be the most important transition from the 2016 offense to the 2017 offense – the transition to a new starting quarterback.
Certainly, junior QB Brad Mayes was no ordinary understudy for the Lehigh Mountain Hawks last season.
Though technically he did back up QB Nick Shafnisky, he showcased his obvious talent multiple times last year, most notably breaking a Yale Bowl record with 524 passing yards and scoring 6 passing touchdowns in a 63-35 win over Yale.
Much press has rightfully gone to the receivers and running backs, but the direction of the 2017 football season might come down to the play of the quarterback whose number switched from No. 14 to No. 4 this season.
“I think Troy and Dom are outstanding players and they deserve all the recognition they’ve been getting,” Brad told me. “And I’m excited to play alongside those guys, because that makes my job that much easier.”

The 2014 season is over, and recruiting has been very much underway for the Lehigh football program.
If you mosey on over to the Lehigh Sports Forum, you can get a list of all the unofficial recruits that head coach Andy Coen and the rest of the coaching staff appear to have secured commitments for the class of 2019.
I always look at the Lehigh football program’s recruiting season as a list to Santa. If I was running the program, what would I want to see under Lehigh’s tree?
In order to do that, we need to see what Lehigh has coming back in 2015, and what we need for the future, and what better place to get that than some of the biggest fans of the program?
(And you don’t even need to work on your ground game to do it.)

Lehigh’s newest online multimedia involves the Lehigh coaching staff on microphone.
This week it was newly-promoted defensive coordinator Joe Bottiglieri, and in the video below you see the coach in various stages of instruction.
The piece of the video that relates to the offense, though, is the highlight of the piece.
Sophomore TE Zach Bucklin, “built like a small Volkswagen”, as coach Bott himself mentioned, barreled into Lehigh’s defensive coordinator, sending them both to the ground.
In an odd sort of way, Bucklin’s tire tracks over Bottiglieri’s back signifies what Lehigh’s offense hopes to be in the 2014 season as well.
Sure, Lehigh will still have the type of offense that will work fast and spread things out. Sure, the playbook will still be as think as a phone book. But to think of this as a finesse team may be a mistake. They may very well be a team that simply is also going to try to out-run and out-muscle you more often.
And, if necessary, run you over.

“At least we have him returning.”
That’s what Lehigh fans have been able to say to themselves each offseason for the last five years.
Some first-team all-Patriot League offensive weapon. Some top Patriot League defensive leader. Something… measurable. “We lose a lot, but at least we have him.”
When Lehigh saw record-breaking QB Chris Lum lost to graduation, the Nation turned to QB Michael Colvin and WR Ryan Spadola to keep the offensive machine humming.
During the past three season, Mountain Hawk fans have grown accustomed to head coach Andy Coen and offensive coordinator Dave Cecchini’s abilities to mold new players and plug them in, not missing a beat.
But they’ve never had to replace this much. Last season’s top rushers are gone. The receiver who’s noe made the 53 man roster of the Jets. The linchpin of the offense – the quarterback – gone.
As we finally enter the 2013 Mountain Hawk football season, the biggest question to answer is: can Lehigh reload on offense?
